Default GPS tracker found under man's car

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101016/...pphu-container

Apparently the FBI placed a GPS tracking device under the mans car with no warrant. This is only in California (where no warrant is required) but seriously, can the government legally do this? Sounds like my rights are slowly being infringed on. What do you think of the government being able to plant GPS tracking devices under your car?

Yeah. I don't see what for they actually bothered with GPS. Was that man going somewhere where signal would be lost?

You have nothing to fear if you've done nothing wrong.

More along the lines of you've got nothing to fear so long as the Government doesn't think you did something wrong. The FBI, ATF, DEA, State and local police, etc, have followed the paths of many innocent men and women before and will many more time from here on out.

I might be wrong, but I believe that is the Communist Party of China's official stance.

True, to a degree. But now (potentially) they can see what I do in my private sphere.

hey when a popular internet company*cough*Google*cough* is recording and storing all of your internet activity and sharing its info with the NSA and nobody's on the streets protesting and ing and threatening to lynch the owners, then i'd say we're well past the stage of shock, horror, cue moral outrage etc

Most states don't require warrants for GPS tracking. And really the FBI could simply follow your car in person, its the same type of evidence gathering in terms of the law, there's no expectation of privacy when you're driving around in public.

what amazes me is the doublethink of some people
they'll readily believe they're Free and their society is somewhat superior to other police states, and yet when they come across reports of invasion of privacy by the state, they simply accept it and move on.

    orwell would weep.

I think it is analagous to having an officer follow you around. A person has no expectation of privacy while in public and can be followed by a police officer anywhere they go. This is simply replacing human eyes for electronic ones.

    Maybe.
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

    Law does.

I see no issue with this. I'd actually rather have the FBI know exactly where I was so I have an alibi!

The difference between authoritarian regimes and liberal democratic countries is that our governments have to be a lot more subtle in manipulating their population. One is open about its' oppression, the other is just more clever about it. And people will defend such behavior because they "have nothing to hide", when that shouldn't be the point in the first place when you're talking about your own privacy.

Well if you see the rest of his statement he is correct, If you park outside your home or in a driveway then they really arent invading your privacy as its nothing you couldnt see by gingerly walking down the street.
