How do I keep my reputation high?

I have the same problem, every time I play. During the course of the game, my global reputation slowly drops, until it's almost impossible for me to ask for a ceasefire, without paying an enormus amount of money. In my curent game, it has just dropped to "decietful". The problem is, I just don't understand why! I almost never declare war (the AI beats me to it). But when I'm drawn in to a war, I retaliate, obviously, and I often capture a territory or two from the aggressor. But how does that make me decietful? I just fight back when attacked.

Is there some part of the game I have misunderstood, or is it only possible to keep a respectable reputation if you don't expand?

Just scroll down the list of subjects.
If you don´t find it, there are more pages at the bottom to choose from (it´s pretty simple). Just find the "reputation and chivalry", click it and read.
