Replacing Grand Campaign with Crusades Campaign

There are several mods out there incorporating various features from the Crusades Campaign into the vanilla Grand Campaign. What I wonder is if it wouldn't be possible to make a mod where one replaces the Crusades Campaign with the Grand Campaign instead? I tried it myself (removed crusades imperial campaign from data/world/maps/campaign and replaces it with vanilla imperial campaign) and the game CTDs when I start the campaign. Given my modest modding skills I'm clueless as to why. Maybe some of you out there has any idea of how to make it work?
