    Default Tips Norway

This faction always seems cool but i cant ever get to far in it. Can u give me any tips or strategies. Primarily how to take Scandinavia, I'm not sure if I should take the Stockholm region or push down into block of the Danes? I dont really like naval warfare to much but in a enclosed area such as the Baltic I can win almost any naval battle. I could also use some tips on raiding Scotland.

Take Aarhus, then take Kalmar. Danes are crippled minus these 2 and you can take rest of Scandinavia at your leisure. For raiding Scotland... usually best to make a small scouting fleet or 2 to draw out pirates and enemy and the main fleet with army aboard slightly behind. The actual raids are usually very easy... more fun to wait for William Wallace or aid whichever side is losing the war in the isles.

I always liked to go Vikings with them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTLQz-O5x2g). This meant building a considerable fleet, putting all kinds of heavy infantry on it, preferably swords and axes, some siege equipment and then going along the coast from city to city plundering them one by one, sacking, selling buildings, moving on. I doubt there's a better way to pay your bills in this game. You can do it to fellow Christians to some degree but it's even easier if you prey on Orthodox or Muslim targets where there's no Pope to hate you for attacking. This strategy provides you with a lot of money - and also a wide variety of opponents to fight against and makes an otherwise boring and remote Norway feel more interesting. A good start for this is after the first crusade which allows you to employ a lot of mercenaries and transport them for free to the Mediterranean. When coming back from a crusade you can burn everything in North Africa, Southern Italy, along the coast of Spain and France and even prepare yourself bases for future conquests in most attractive places like Corinth or Palermo leaving some forces there while the bulk of the army returns home to teach Danish or English a lesson.

Actually I think that's the game I'm going to play now. :-)

Rushing Danes is a bit cheap, I think you'd have far more fun taking Sweden for yourself and letting them sit between you and Germans so you still have some Viking vs Viking action back home. But if you don't feel as secure, feel free to do Kalmar 3 centuries earlier and under your rule.

I've always love the position and infantry of Norway (pssh, no need for them stuck up knights). I tended to just keep to myself, but it then gets boring. I have rarely raided as the AI tends to cheat and send in uber-stacks with cavalry. Life in the snow is damn hard, but when you have most of your army geared towards anti-infantry; it becomes quite fun when going a'Viking. I yearn for javelins though.

I've killed Denmark on turn 6. I don't think it can be done faster... 1 army, 3 boats, 3 cities, 3 battles. :-) Lost almost whole my army - and one of three starting generals. Pope hates me. Who cares.

    - 3 turns to besiege Arhus with all my starting armies. I was headed to Oslo by boat - but when I noticed Arhus is in range, I started thinking what a real Viking would do in my situation (to do it properly you need to get drunk, see something shiny and kill and/or rape everyone who tries to stop you from stealing it). :-)
    - Turn 4 to ignore Pope's order to cease hostilities, take Arhus (there's no way spear militia wins on walls with starting viking dudes and they had spear militia there), grab a merc boat to add to my fleet (1000k, I'd say I was robbed but money I paid for it came from robbery), rout Danish fleet and besiege Roskilde.
    - Turn 5 to take Roskilde and move my army to Lund.
    - Between turn 5 and 6 enemy sallies forth from Lund. I rush the gate, kill city's garrison, turn my army around and defend against much bigger Danish army which came as reinforcements until counter gives me loooong 5 minutes at the plaza and kills the Danish faction. During last two minutes I was thinking I am going to lose because my army was outflanked and my general and prince lost almost all their bodyguards in their failed attempt to prevent that flanking... But I've won.
    - I send my fleet back to Norway for reinforecements while my King and Prince are hunting remaining Danish armies gone rebel now. My diplomat is two turns away from Rome to make amends to the Pope and call a crusade my Prince could embark on to repent his sins while his father subjugates Sweden.

    <loads of stuff>
Heh, I often kill them by turn 5.
Turn 1: send Øystein Håkonsen down to Roskilde's shores
Turn 2: attack army outside Roskilde luring the Danes out, send Magnus Håkonsen down towards Århus
Turn 3: lay siege to Århus
Turn 4: take Århus, Øystein lays siege to Lund
    Turn 5: take Lund

Could probably do it in 4, but then I'd suffer larger losses.
Note: this is using my Compilation, where Norway starts with Oslo, and has a small fleet outside Oslo

Uhm, I have recently started my norwegian campaign. I'm at turn 50 and down in Europe. The English are fighting me and have alot of feudal knights (horsemen) and more cavalry than me, they mow my infantry down like they was grass on the open battlefield. Occasionally I could recruit Husklar (spelling), however it takes too long time to recruit them. I also have svenner, but they are no match for the English horsemen in a open fight.

Yesterday I nerd raged over the powerful charge of horsemen.

Have to say that I love the Danes/Norwegians as a faction... but dread dread dread facing an eastern army in the open field... mongols and horse archers and archers and horse archers... and and and more horse archers.

    Epzilon,

Ok so the English have excellent Knights on horse, but you have as good if not better infantry, you need to get them to commit their horsemen at your Spears and utilise Crossbowmen from behind the Spearmen to bring down their horsemen

Norse archers... the nemesis of cavalry charges going where you don't want them...

I would like to say I know the basics on the battlefield. I do have norse archers with pikes that I deploy in front of my infantry, but it's playing lottery if the cavalry will hit them or not. I know I have better infantry than them, but when they charge with 5 units with knights on horse they will plow my super infantry down like they was peasants. Till the point where the English infantry charge in and its an even fight. I don't have much cavalry (i might have to train some svenners) and use them to flank the infantry to try to get them to rout though.

As for the norse archers, they are great, but I get the feeling they are awful against armored troops such as knights on horse. They do take out light horsemen very easily though.

edit: Regarding spearmen, I only have the spear militia trained from cities and to be honest they are not so great compared to other infantry units from castles.

    Epzilon,

Do you have access to Merc Crossbowmen and/or Irish Kerns?

Both these units very effective against enemy armour, but they will need protecting by your spearmen

I have played as Norway and Sweden(Battle for Baltic Sub Mod), both of these factions have not so good cavarly, I had to fight HRE and Teuton Heavy Cavarly, some of the best in the game, you need to hold them and allow your Crossbows to fire at them. The Javelins are deadly, but you will need to micromanage, timing is the essence.

playing as Norway as well. I was wondering what do you guys do when the Crusades came crawling? I was in the middle of assembling a massive force to finish off Denmark when the Crusades came calling. At the same time, my finances was almost dipping to the negative so I sent them down to the Middle East. Now I'm stuck with a standalone city, Cairo, in the middle of all the Fatamids.

It happens between 1190 and 1210.
What exactly they do, I'm not sure.
They use maces according to the EDU, and have pretty good stats.
