    Default EDB Error

Since adding a new faction from scratch didn't work I tried to rename the whole hre to holland and then later add the hre back.

Changing everything from hre to holland work without any problems, but now I'm adding the hre back into the game.
But now it is giving me an error in the EDB (I'm pretty sure it is here, because adding a EDB with some faults in it to a working mod, it starts to crash at the same place).

Is there any way to check the file for errors? Becasue I can't find them by hand.
All I did is replace every ' holland, ' with ' holland, hre, '

I'll add the EDB and error log

give us log with error option. This is EDB. Usually trace is not necessary.

What do you mean with the log with error option?

in your cfg file you've got trace option
    change it to errors
    it should looks like this:
    level = * error
and it is much more easier to read and much lesser time consuming Unfortunately it doesn't show all.

I'm afraid that isn't really interesting, it finds no errors.
That's why I'm posting here for help.

    Error log:
    Code:
    10:00:19.904 [system.rpt] [always] CPU: SSE2
10:00:19.906 [system.rpt] [always] ==== system log start, build date: Feb 25 2008 version development ===

    10:00:19.917 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/data_2.pack

10:00:31.539 [system.rpt] [error] Uh oh. This isn't good. No idea why, but exiting now. Sorry pal.

it should check someone better then me. I cannot find any errors or you havn't got any errors. I don't know it.
Try to restart your system and try to start your mod again. From time to time it's enought.

Have you put back the hre faction back into descr_sm_factions?

    Yes I added the following:
    Code:
    faction hre
    culture northern_european
    religion catholic
    symbol models_strat/symbol_holy_roman_empire.CAS
    rebel_symbol models_strat/symbol_rebels.CAS
    primary_colour red 0, green 0, blue 0
    secondary_colour red 255, green 210, blue 0
    loading_logo loading_screen/symbols/symbol128_hre.tga
    standard_index 11
    logo_index FACTION_LOGO_HOLY_ROMAN_EMPIRE
    small_logo_index SMALL_FACTION_LOGO_HRE
    triumph_value 5
    custom_battle_availability	yes
    can_sap no
    prefers_naval_invasions no
    can_have_princess yes
    has_family_tree yes
or does it matter if holland and hre use the same cas and TGA files?

I think you have run into the same (or similar) error that you might have made when previously you tried to add a faction.
somewhere in one of the files (if you edited them all) there is a mistake. In retrospect, the EDB is the easiest one. you still have the EDB, the banners_new - the list is quite long.
Adding a new faction is by far the most difficult and error prone procedure as you have to mod all the necessary files before you can even think of testing. My suggestion: forget about the idea that it could be the EDB. Take out my tutorial and go through all the files listed in there and make sure your entries are correct.

    Ok, I will try that.
    One question though,
the error can't be because I haven't anything for the hre to battle_models.modeldb right? Because I understood that is not per se necessary.

So if I get it right what you did was change HRE to holland. Then cloned the current holland into the HRE. Problem is they cant share certain things like having the same faction_logo cas or what have you, some things MUST be unique to that faction and or named a certain way (I dont know what all off the top of my head, but they are there).

I'm not sure in that specific scenario whether it would error or not, but usually indescrepencies between battle_models.modeldb and export_descr_unit normally get a fairly descriptive error in your log, so you would know it if that were the problem. In this scenario I don't think it would error at all until maybe actually loading a battle map, but dont quote me on that (provided the model entry at least exists, despite not having a specific hre section)

Thanks that was what I was looking for
Yes they alle use the same textures and TGA files.
I think I will try it tomorrow Does anyone have a list of all these files? (otherwise I will just change all of them)

I just spend the last hour cloning the hre again (in a backup I made) and I got the same error again, so frustrating. But I think we found the problem

The creating a world tut: adding a faction pretty much spells it out. Just read through it (it isnt that long) all of the instances where something must have a specific name, are pointed out.

There is obviously still something you are missing, I have added a faction using that tutorial and it worked fine. I don't know what that is because I don't know what you've done.

No matter if you say you did this this or that, it doesn't mean you did (I am not saying you are being dishonest, just saying you may think you did soemthing when you didnt). Or its entirely possible you changed something else thats causing this problem. That is why it is imperative you keep track of EXACTLY every little thing youve done when adding a faction because you have to touch so much stuff before you can actually test it out.

Myself for example, keep a text file when I make edits listing out the files and what ive changed in said file, that way if I get a CTD that doesnt trace to anything I can easily go back and check for mistakes.

Factions can share stuff like the logos and CAS files. Check England and the Saxons. But you have to have different entries in the text files and the symbols in the menu folder have to be separate too.
