    Hi Guys,

I'm playing Denmark and have been attacked by Norway but now I'm being threaterned with Ex-com!

I though that if your the one who is attacked then the pope goes after the aggressor?

You are "allowed" to defend but not to activly shed blood of your fellow christians and attack. The pope doesn't care about who the aggressor is just like a teacher doesn't care who of the two boys fighting in the school yard started it. He wants the fighting to stop, the rest can be dealt with later.

U get a warning as well if u blockade their port of infact attack their settlement.
So it's better to blitz all the settlements u want at once.
And fighting on fields or defending your settlements will not get you excommunicated.

    Edit
    Bane beat me to it.

Chances are, the warning was a two-way excommunication warning, meaning Norway also got the warning as well. What are the Papal ratings for you and Norway? How early in the game?

Your excomm warnings are directly proportional to your Pope-o-meter. If Norway has more favour with the Pope, the Papacy is more lenient with them, and will let Norway continue killing other Christians for a little longer than someone with 'average' favour with the Pope - in this case, most probably you.

Also, defending does not count if someone declares war on you, and then you go an attack them. Defending is literally only defending when you are attacked. Therefore, if Norway blockades your port, you can't do anything about it unless you want to deal with the Pope.

Not entirely true. I have had full papal approval and still get warnings immediatly after I counter an attack. The excom-warnings come when you are on the offensive, just as Bane and Ishan wrote. As long as you fight on your own soil nothing will happen.

although, with your own pope and with full approval, instead of a excom, you can get 'warned' by the pope and just risk losing approval. Not as common, but I have gotten this a couple of times in my wars against Scotland as England after doing some crusades for the pope and getting a lot of cardinals in the college.

You get warnings depending on your rating. If you have full Pope love, you'll get warnings for a couple of turns before your meter drops quite significantly. Once it's around 2/3 full, or it was around 2/3 in the first place, that's when you're threatened with excomm.

Just do as the above post said and constantly gift a small amount each turn to keep the Pope in place. Other than that, gift him a few thousand dollars before you declare war. As soon as the meter drops even slightly, gift him a few more thousand to keep it at full. It's very easy to conquer all of Christendom without getting excomm'd if you have a diplomat in Rome.
