Default I'm new to Stainless Steel

I've searched the forums before I posted this and couldn't find the answer that I'm looking for. I just installed the Stainless Steel mod and selected an Early Era campaign to play. After taking around 20 turns or so I've noticed that none of my generals are gaining command stars despite winning a few heroic victories and many other clear victories. I selected at the beginning of the game to use SavageAI and opted not to use the RR/RC before starting the campaign. I have heard of this sort of thing happening when using Byg's (i think that is the right name) mod but I have not downloaded his mod myself. I realize that this type of thing is used in some mods to increase the difficulty and if others find that enjoyable then more power to them, but part of the enjoyment in playing for me is to see the progression of my generals. Does anyone know what might be happening and how I can fix it? I have noticed that every other faction has generals with a minimum of five and six command stars, in case that helps answer my question. Thank you in advance.

I take "opted not to use RR/RC" to mean that you didn't install the bugfixes?

I attempted to install the Bug Fixes and they asked me if it was ok to copy over a bunch of files which I gave it permission to do. Once it was finished an error message came up saying that it didn't work.

    *Update*

So I'm an idiot. I had the mod folder set to read only. I went and changed it so that I could copy over the files. I'll try the bug fix and update if I find any changes.

It was set read only by the system or you set it to read only? Because there isn't a good reason to have it that way but you are the second or third person that phrased it that way.

My suggestion is to start a new campaign if you ticked the option to "disable RR". That (bugged) option is removed in the fix, for background info and alternatives do a search

I finally got it. Using Windows Vista I couldn't change the folder to allow me to copy over the files. Had to drag the mods folder onto my desktop, update it and then copy it back. It removed the RR/RC option when I started a new game. Thanks for pointing out what I was missing. Great community here, kudos to everyone involved, especially the modders. I'm really impressed with as many well educated people here that there isn't any condescension.

thanks for this thread, I'm using vista also and had a problem getting the fix to work. I remember in the vanilla map I had to copy the text document unto desktop to change the unlockable factions and save the document, so I don't know why I haven't thought of doing the same thing with the mods folder. Thanks for the tips!

Take a trip into the Napolean Total War thread and it might change your mind :p

You should always disable UAC in vista or Windows 7 when installing games that requires overwrite.

There are no bugs that prevent generals from gaining command. Believe me, I've played through all the bugs, and none of them had that.

I'm going to assume that the reason your generals are not gaining command is that you are doing something that I used to do and have now learned not to. When I saw an enemy stack, I would "attack" it to see exactly what units were in it, then click "withdraw" when the battle screen came up, rather than "start battle". I would then form up the necessary units to fight the battle. What I did not know was that, even though no battle was fought, just by peeking at the battle screen my general technically "lost" the battle every single time I did that, thus losing command stars.

    Don't do it.

Good point, I used to that too, especially with sieges, I would start siege to see how many people I starved and if my army is ready to begin the siege.

I like to have a spy travel with my military so that I can see what I'm up against. Even though it might be a little unrealistic to only take a portion of your military against the enemy I enjoy challenging myself by bringing a smaller force into the battle and I use the spy to scout the enemy before attacking them. I'm really hoping that with the bug fixes correct the problem that I was having because building up my nobles and generals is the best part of the game for me. No matter what anyone tries to do the AI is never going to give the kind of challenge that one would hope for.
