    Default National ID

What do you think of national id's? Pretty much all European countries have some sort of national id, however the requirements in having one and carrying one differ from country to country. There are places where passports are carried for ID purposes (which I find ridiculous). Places like US and Canada there's a lack of such national id, so people use driver licenses instead.

In my opinion, the national id card should be something required for all citizens to have and carry around. Everybody should be ready to identify themselves with proper governmental documents. Driver licenses should be kept separate, and passports should be used only for international travel. This could reduce fraud, speed up bureaucratic processes, and be easier for police to carry out investigations and questionings.

Maybe a unified EU id card would be a better alternative...(I know that won't make to many people here happy) but still I see a lot of prospects here.

People don't want them in the US, for some reason. Me being a person who has two different permanent addresses in different states, I'd rather like a national ID, personally.

I have a National ID for Venezuela but Id prefer not to have one in the US, to be honest. In many things you require the id, which is annoying...

If you are a permanent resident of the country, then yes you get a id. The ID in turn can reflect your immigration status.

The problem is that most foreigners are tourists, so what you want them to do if they cannot use their passport except in traveling??

well not for tourists who are just visiting temporarily, only people who are permanent residences of the country in question. These tourists have their passports with them so they can use that or can use the ID of their home country.

Nonsense. We could make it much easier for the police to identify us than that. Why don’t we all have registration numbers and barcodes tattooed on our foreheads? We could also be implanted with rfid chips under our skin. We should all have to register our mobile phone numbers and carry them with us at all times so the authorities can track our locations in real time. We should also have to have CCTV everywhere including in our homes to stop any potentially subversive activities.
Thought crime might be a problem for a while but we can get around that with a rigorous regimen of mandatory brain washing. It’s the only way to be sure.

They can already do that actually, plus all your phone calls are monitored by the government and everything you do on your computer too. But seriously, if you have nothing to hide, there's no reason not to have something like iris scans for identification, plus it would make things like airports a lot quicker.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

This is national ID, I have one just like that in my pocket and I'm required to carry it with me everywhere, all the time, because the police have the right to check out ID of every one. If I don't have it I can get a ticket just like for driving without license.

With this ID I can also cross the border to all neighboring country (including EU) and at any institution, anywhere I can show it to prove who I am quickly.

It's a good, great system actually.I never understood how and why can someone oppose having personal identification card.

our Police can't ask anyone for information unless they have a good reason.

I think ID cards are a good scheme to introduce to countries that don't already have them. When I was in Brussels I was required to register at the commune and I received a Belgian identity card as a foreign national, which was easy proof of identity without having to worry about carrying my passport. The fact that ID cards can be used at EU border crossings is also something which adds to their convenience; instead of having 2 or 3 different objects for identity i.e. an ID card, a passport, and a driving licence, I would quite like to see all these unified into one credit-card sized card, although that would cause problems were it to be lost or stolen.

Exactly, which is why we need biometric IDs. You can't get your iris lost or stolen .

The Good: Convenient, easier to spot criminals.

The Bad: Easy to implement 1984 like government controls.

If you never think your government could go rogue, which is every left winger I know living in a mostly left wing government (oddly when the right takes over they ASSUME its going rogue at least in the US), then they are fine.

Personally, I'd rather not make it easy for them.

    You missed off a couple.

The ugly: The easier it is to check up on people the more laws they invent that can be broken.

The corrupt: The more power you spread around the more kinds of corruption the people with power invent.

In the UK the second the left get into office they suddenly go all authoritarian on us – the exact opposite of what people expect. It’s weird. Being antiestablishment never seems to translate into being pro individual freedom.

Let the US government mandate a national ID, and I will be one of the first scoff-laws. I won't carry one of those things, for the same reason that I have NEVER carried a cellphone. Let them put me in prison. I will push my case to the Supreme Court, if I have to.

I will never carry what my dad used to call a "commie card" ...

Do you get the idea that I'm one of the Americans who doesn't want a national ID?

It's just an ID, how is it similar to 1984? You carry a driver license I suppose? In essence national ID is just a step up from US driver license. It meant to ease the beauractic process that can slow down society and also make it safer.

commie card? It's just an id much like a driver license, not the communist manifesto
