But if the cause be not good, the king himself hath a heavy reckoning to make, when all those legs and arms and heads, chopped off in battle, shall join together at the latter day and cry all 'We died at such a place; some swearing, some crying for surgeon, some upon their wives left poor behind them, some upon the debts they owe, some upon their children rawly left.

Neither...I'm just glad I've lived in an era when there hasn't been total war on a massive scale like that of WW1 and WW2. I am respectful for the sacrifices that our forefathers made and just hope to God that history will never be repeated.
I want to be a Swiss/Swedish soldier.![]()

World War II, so I wouldn't be stuck in trenches and attacked with mustard gas.

Royal Air Force for me, thanks.
Ugh, neither.
Neither. I think i've read enough about men getting blasted to pieces to not want to take part in it.
For example:
Account 1:
A US 10st Airborne captain is moving through woods with another soldier during the Normandy campaign. He then trips over something on the ground, and just as he does a shell flies right where his head would have been. He looks back and the soldier behind him had been blasted to pieces.
Account 2:
Jerry hit an ammunition dump, it was hell on earth, lads running, screaming, on fire, some lay there with limbs shattered ... We carried some of them back on a 3-ton lorry where the Medics were doing quick amputations. I never thought I could do it, but I was holding arms and legs partly blown off while the Medics sawed them off and cut the last bits of skin off with some scissors, the poor sods. ~ Corporal Ron Rhodes
Quotations:
The Irish Guards [1st British Infantry Division, 24th Guards Brigade] were further whittled away in the ravines and taking casualties to the very last minute of their time in the Boot. Even as they were handing over to the Dukes, thirty-seven-year-old Sergeant Jimmy Wylie from Belfast was killed in a German bombardment. When they left Anzio harbour two weeks later the battalion had suffered 94% casualties.
---
The already shattered Foresters entered a particularly nasty area at the end of February with a strength of 250 officers and men. The unit was immediately subjected to all manner of bombardments and infantry attacks, and at one point the Germans were rolling hand grenades from the edge of a gully down into their slit trenches. When they were relieved five days later the Foresters, too tired to climb out themselves, had to be pulled out of their slit trenches. Their sunken eyes spoke of the most immense trauma. There had been just thirty survivors. ~ Anzio (Lloyd Clark)

Bitter is the wind tonight,
it stirs up the white-waved sea.
I do not fear the coursing of the Irish sea
by the fierce warriors of Lothlind.

It would depend entirely on what Army I served in and what part of that Army I served in.
For example, you were probably safer in WW1 as an Artilleryman than you would be in WW2, what with the lack of enemy airpower or fast armour.
supposing you were German and knew about the final solution.
would you join the SS and try to be a secret resistance agent? No idea how you could help without being discovered really...
As a Brit I would rather have fought in World War 2.
Like others have said though, I am just glad we are not a generation on which full scale war has been forced onto us. It still amazes me what the generations of World War 1 and 2 had to live through.
