Medieval TW2 battle cutscene crash

I run medieval TW2 on steam and have been playing for around 2 years just fine

I stopped playing and experimented with a few mods but wasnt able to really get anything to work so gave up medieval for a while

then I tried playing the Crusades expansion again recently as Byzantine but everytime an in-battle cutscene plays(general dies, gate broken, etc) the game crashes due to unspecified error and is forced to close

PS: this does not apply to campaign map cutscenes(assassination, marriage, etc)

You can try:

[game]
disable_events = 0

to 1

event_cutscenes = 1

to 0.

in the medieval2.preferences.cfg.

how do i open up the cfg?
do i need a cfg extension?

Just open it with notepad
