Default From a newbie: this mod is like a whole new (much-improved) RTW!

Just to give you a background... I started playing CIV V after it was released and was disappointed, I was glad they got rid of killer stacks, but putting tactical battles across hundreds of miles doesn't work either.

So I did some research and came across the Total War games. I ordered RTW gold, Medieval II gold, and Total War: Empire from Amazon, and got them a couple of weeks back. I started playing the campaign on RTW (M/M difficulty) which started off really fun and quickly got boring: it seemed that the battles were highly repetitive and, frankly, boring after awhile, and there was nothing stopping me from steam rolling everyone. Essentially, taking over a town was: siege, walk in where the computer opponent was just standing in the center of town, pick them apart with my archery, then finally at the end, charge in with infantry and cavalry.... battles where I killed 1000 of them and they killed less than 10 of my men were commonplace.

Before giving up and going to Medieval War II, I downloaded RS2 last week, and started a Roman campaign ---- all I can say is Wow... wow... Some of the things that I noticed:

    1. The graphics were like 100 times better... and terrain matters, I try to beat my opponent to the top of the hill and then looking around takes my breath away.
    2. Much more complex and interesting economy.
    3. Battles got challenging again... the AI is actually aggressive, in campaign and in battle! What a shock when Hannibal ambushed me on turn one and he actually trounced me! What fun when the rebellions occurred and I had to teach them what happens to traitors (I shouted out in victory when every single one of them was squashed!)
    4. It got so frustrating to me in vanilla that every single battle I had to go into the Roman infantry and set them to auto fire on, by default they were off... but not in your mod! It seems small, but that micromanagement gets really boring after awhile.
    5. They come knocking on your door on isolated islands... in so many of these types of games, the computer attacks islands poorly if at all... not in this game. Also it does things that amaze me at times... For example, Hanno came and attacked a city on one of my islands. I quickly brought over a big force and attacked him... interestingly, we started the battle, and he just started his troops marching backwards. At the end of the battle, they all retreated with no casualties on either side, and jumped into a waiting ship so I couldn't get at them again... now that was smart!

I am now about 26 years into it and have about 20 provinces. I do want to mention a few frustrations though:

    1. Battles take a loooooong time... when I have 2000 troops and the opponent has 3000 quite often the 45 minutes expires before I am able to take a town. I have to attack it again.
    2. Money comes SOOO easy in this game, I can't spend it all. I have Rome creating a full slate of new troops every turn, and every city has a construction project going every turn, and I still just keep accumulating wealth, I am getting close to 200,000 and going up every turn. Taxes make up about 90% of it.
    3. Since there is such a penalty for leaving a city without a governor, my generals are no longer named characters, just meaningless horsemen... and I still have several cities without governors. There just aren't enough named general/governors to go around. Are there any tricks for recruiting more of these?
    4. It's hard to know what buildings lead to what. I have used the building browser, but trying to follow the thread of what leads to what that leads to what is quite difficult. But there is fun in trying to figure it out.

The last four are minor concerns, to be sure. What amazes me is that you have been working on this for three years, without monetary compensation, just purely to give something back to the community of players. I am in awe of such dedication. All I can say is thank you.

    Your statements

    1) Well most mods have better units than vanilla RTW. Most mods have excpanded maps - that was one thing I always found wroing with vanilla the small number of settlements/regions on the map.

    Your questions
    1) You can always try one of Tone's sub-mods (less stacks and shorter battles). Well, there is no real surprise that it takes longer to take a settlement if you've got 2000 troops compared to the 3000 defenders. You can either wait until the defenders sally from the settlement (on the last turn before you take the settlement) or bring more armies. You could always remove the time limit on the battles - that is either an option at the start of a cmaspaign or you can change it sduring the campaign. I don't do that as it's rare for me to have a battle that times out.

    2) What difficulty are you playing? You should find that as you expand and build up your settlements the money does dry up (as higher level buildings cost a lot more). There is a time that even with every settlement constructing buildings and creating new armies every turn that you end up with a lot of money. The background script will start taking it off you over 200,000.

    3) You should be able to recruit generals in a settlement if you've constructed the 3rd level barracks(?). Make sure that you build up your education buildings (academies) and some temples as this can result in the generals getting very nice retinues/traits that make them excellent governors. I've usually two generals in each settlement - especially if one is over 50. I know others do this as well.

    Enjoy the mod!

    wow, thanks for the comments!

    1. I don't want to try the submods quite yet, as I want to play it out at least once with the original campaign. Not sure I want to actually turn off time limits on battles yest.... I actually like how I time out of battles, it prompts me to do things faster rather than just sit back and safely knock off a few of their soldiers at a time with long-range siege, for example... which seems almost like an exploit.

    2. Since I am a new player, I am playing at difficulty M/M. H/M or H/H would probably be more challenging in this area, I'll have to give it a go in my next campaign!

    3. Good to know about recruiting generals! Roma is now a top-level city, I'll have to see what I haven't built there yet. I don't remember seeing an option to recruit generals, so I probably have not built the right building yet. I have built the academy, but none of the higher education buildings than that in Roma.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

thanks magefsx, that wasn't clear to me.... I just thought they were heavy cavalry, and since the Latin Medium Cavalry's ratings are so close to theirs and have almost double the size, I never bothered to build any... ;-) Now I know.

Interestingly I've found that AI is behaving in what seems like a more sensible way far more often and retreating....quite often they leave a folorn hope of a rearguard behind to cover their retreat.

Yes, I've also seen the AI leave a few of the engaged units on the battlefield while the rest run away to fight another day (RTW Alex exe).

Seen it too, attacked by ptolomees, but once on the battle map they simply withdraw.

The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get him as soon as you can, strike him as hard as you can and keep moving on.

Yep, this is familiar, my heavy/light cav chasing a army on full retreat while being ambushed by a fresh rearguard of heavy spearmen. Not random either, solid high ground covered from all sides, making victory nearly impossible.

This is my first go around with RS. Great mod! Installed it this weekend and could not stop playing (my girlfriend is not such a big fan). It is the best strategy game I have ever played.

The scripted stacks are perfect. In other Total War games there is a tipping point when you take their biggest cities and that faction is permanently crippled. In RS2 factions rally all of their strength to defend their homeland. It is the most realistic way that I have seen a game simulate the difficulty of an aggressive invasion. I have had many strategic withdrawals and have come close to having an army destroyed many times. The tensest moments I have had in RTW in years.

The enemy battle formations are brilliant. Enemy calvary masks my movements and only seems to attack when I have committed to another target, hitting me at the right moment. Occasionally a complete rout looks inevitable and the enemy pulls of an organized retreat with a strong rear guard.

Great mod! Thanks you all your hard work RS team
