Problem at start up.

I've owned Medieval II for a good while now. It is probably my favorite total war game. Recently, my computer got infected and I had to do a destructive system recovery. I reinstalled Med II, but I got the "Medieval II has encountered an unspecified problem and will now exit." message. I rebooted my computer and still got the message. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Still get the message. My urge to create a massive medieval empire is quite overwhelming at the moment, so this has been a cause of some annoyance.

Can anyone help me?

What version of Windows?
Did you reinstall Dx9?

Okay, so I tried everything, so I used can you run it? http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/intro.aspx
It said my video card isn't compatible. In fact, it is saying that I don't have one at all if I'm reading this right. I have a video card and it ran medieval easily, Empire too to an extent.

Here what it said:

Video Card Minimum: 100% compatible DirectX 9.0c 128 MB Hardware Accelerated video card with Shader 1 support and the latest drivers You Have:

Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card

Required You Have

Video RAM 128 MB

3D Yes No

Pixel Shader version 1.1 0.0

This probably means that you're using a laptop with an integrated GPU chipset that was never really meant for gaming. The only way we'll know for sure from our end is if you post your DX log so that we can see your system specs. Any chance you could give us that info? Here's how:

DxDiag is easy to run if you have any knowledge of Windows. Go to the "Start" button and in that menu choose "Run Program" option ("Run..." in Vista IIRC). In the pop-up field type "dxdiag" and press enter. This is the DirectX test program - let it finish the test. After the test is finished choose the button toward the bottom labeled "Save All Information..." and save it to your desktop. Next open up this forum and post the results by copying and pasting directly to the forum. Please don't post attachments as they take up more space and time - just copy and paste. Please post ALL info and if you can please wrap it in a spoiler tag to minimize page size.

Also, don't know if this matters, but a install hardware pop keep coming up at start up, for a video controller, I try to download it but it won't say I need some CD drive or something.

Even though it's a desktop you still have a generic video chipset - you're using the bog standard VGA driver. It may play Medieval I and Empire to some degree but it's going to have problems with M2.

Have you ever gotten M2 to run on that system?

And just so we know - what's the exact message you're getting for that hardware pop-up that you're receiving? Maybe it's a vital clue here. You may not have the correct driver for your card and that's why it's not showing properly.

Lastly, update XP to Service Pack 3 - use the Windows Updater to make sure everything is up to date on that system and then check the game again. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

VGA thing is the video controller I was talking about. And I actually had a lot more problems with Empire than I did with M2. (I couldn't go into battles or the game would crash.)

Yeah, for like 3 years.

You need to run HP restore for your computer. The graphics chip is not even showing up. That is the main reason for your graphics issues.

How does HP even manage to stay in business? They seem to intentionally make it difficult to run their systems....

The operating word is proprietary. They make it so you can't use someone else's including the BIOS. Been there, done that. They do make dependable machines but upgrading and customizing is almost impossible. They'd rather sell you a new one than unlock the tools to do the same to the existing one. That is why I build my own.

Do you have a setup disc that came with the computer? I would hope so.
Do you have a D: drive with your computer's install files on it? Mine did.
Can you find the computer's serial number on it? You may need to go to HP's website and file a ticket with their support people. One way or anther, you are missing important drivers.

Probably not, I've moved since I bought it five years ago. I'm updating windows right now (it's taking forever) I hope that will work. Other wise I'll just have to wait till I can go computer shopping.

If Ishan's trick doesn't work do you think bypassing the HP BIOS lockdown would help? I've never worked with their "proprietary" systems before (and on an aside - just exactly who owns the system here? Not HP last I looked....

Are the missing one the ones with an "!" on them? Cause it say it can't find the software when I try to update them. All the others just say "can not find more compatible".
