Default Why isn't an alliance option offered to me?

I am playing SS 6.3, Holy Roman Empire, and I can't get an alliance with the Roman Empire (Byzantiniums) because the option is not offered to my diplomat. I am at war with no one. My allies are England, and Teutonic Order, and Kievian Russ. The Byzantines are allied with Teutonic Order, Aragon, Cumans, Genoa, Crusader States, and are enemies of the Fatamids, Mongols, and Sicily. My diplomat is level 4. My reputation is very reliable, and I have good relations with the Byzantines..So what triggers the diplomatic alliance option?

Also I am assassinating Byzantine orthodox priests left and right. That may have something to do with it, however it is not showing up in my GOOD relations with the Byzantines..

You might be at your ally limit. I find once I have three or so allies I can not get any more.

That's my thinking too. However, currently I am not at war with anyone, or enemies with anyone, but in the past I was allied with the Papal States and THEY were at war with the Byzantines. So maybe things didn't get reset, and it's all cluttered up...

you can have unlimited alliances... I have been allied with all christian nations and all but one orthodox at the same time...

another reason for not getting an alliance might be that a crusade is called against Byz, although I don't think that should effect anything...

take a sceenshot of the diplomatic window so we can see all your and their alliances... that might help us out....

If he's allied with someone who is at war with the Byzantiniums might that prevent the alliance option?

Really?..Well that explains things..I have been "cheating" by making my family members prolific so I have more generals and governors. And the other cheat I have used is the toggle_fow so I can see the map. That shouldn't make a difference, and if it does than I think its a bug...

    nope... it doesn't

I would say that it might have something to do with the wars/vassalage that the Byz empire is having... Although IME that shouldn't be an issue...

The fact that they offered an alliance shows that it wasn't a corrupt game but some condition that wasn't met... strange indeed...

ah well... nice campaign map btw... +rep for your nice screenies...

EDIT: just realized something... you are both allied to Teutonic Order... Who are the Order currently in war with? That might be the conflict if you or the Byz are allied with someone that you shouldn't be allied with.... ish...

There are no limits to how many allies you can have lol.
Sometimes that just happens buddy, yet somehow they can ask for alliance when they want to.

Yes. I have outstanding relations after the agreement.

here are screen shots of the Teutonic Order's Diplomatic status at the same time that this bug occurred, in 1287 AD.

    The Byzantines cannot be crusaded.

Exactly. They don't like you, so they're just not picking up the phone when they know it's you.

I could be wrong, but IMHO, it may have to do with your relationship with that faction. Just because you are not at war, doesn't necessarily mean someone likes you. I've come across that before where I've wanted to ally with someone to possibly shore up a border but no dice. Check what the faction thinks of you. If your relationship is poor or terrible or something they may not ally, then check another faction where your relationship is good and see if that works. Just a guess though.
