Hi guys,
Just as the title says should I convert any of my starting cities into castles? Or is there enough castle in the rest of Scandinavia to supply me with troops?

Hamburg. Go there fast.

That's a tough question. There are 5 castles in Scandinavia. Which is alot. However, the danes don't start off with any castles in the beginning. So maybe convert one city into a castle, and get the viking raiders and see how that works. I haven't tried it yet.
NO! Grab Oslo before the Norwegians which then hems them in. When a little stronger grab Hamburg and hold it.

Upsala, Skara, and Kalmar are all castles in Scandanavia. You should be able to get at least two of these before Norway does.
You also have Oslo, Kalmar, Skara and the one on north of Nykoeping.

I keep Oslo and Kalmar and convert the rest to cities. I use Hamburg as the rock upon which the HRE breaks it's armies. Again and again they come.

Yeah, this is the best. Keep Trondheim as a castle too.
Op Zoom?
The one that's on the left shore. Above the city.
Kalmar and Hamburg is enough for Denmark for a long time in my opinion. Rest castles can be turned into cities and then further on in the campaign there are many more castles to capture either in the isles or along the Baltic into Germany.
It is a long time before you can afford more than the output of 2 castles anyway. Eventually you will be able to but by then your borders probably moved away from starting position anyway and border castles are more useful.
The RozMod has made Lund a castle and made Skara a town. (keeping the town/castle balance in scandinavia)
That way denmark can recruit more than just spear militia from turn one.
And you don't necessarily have to attack the HRE for Hamburg. They will happily sell it.
Hamburg is also a fairly poor choice for a castle early on - there are no access to Viking Raiders there, meaning you won't have any infantry more advanced than spear militia untill you reach Fortress level.
Not

Not really worried about using Hamburg as a training centre as I am not expanding into HRE. As I said I use it as a buffer so the HRE does not Waltz on in to prime real-estate.
PS- how much do they usually sell Hamburg for roughly?
PPS- @OP, Acouple to a few castles should see you right![]()

Thanks for the respone guys only into my 3rd turn but its given me an idea of were I'm going to head with the very early campaign.... taking Oslo and hemming in the Norwiegens seems like a good idea! Also taking Hamburg and using it as a block to the HRE... great idea :-)
