    Default Another unspecified error problem

Just re-installed Medieval II and Kingdoms after a looong time. However, when I try to start the game it crashes right away and gives me the 'unspecified error' problem and exits. Here's the system.log

First update to Kingdoms 1.05 to get the last version and the last bug fixes, then try it.

I tried it and got multiple 'failed to update' messages. So then I uninstalled Kings and Medieval II and cleaned up everything, then when I tried to fire up just Medieval before I installed kingdoms, got the unspecified error thing again.

I find it strange that the log shows the error both times right after the program tries to open the preferences/keys.dat file twice for both M2 and Kingdoms. It looks like that's what is throwing the error but I can't see why that would be.

Maybe if you made your own file and inserted it into the Preferences folder that would solve the problem? This is a strange bug.....

The game is not loading right.
Reinstall Medieval2, try Medieval2 vanilla campaign.
If good, install its patches and Kingdoms.
If good, install the Kingdoms patch.
If any step not good, see if you can try the discs on another computer.

In your case, vanilla as in Medieval II Total War 1.0.

So I went out and bought the Battle Pack from Target, and installed the discs contained within. Now the game works just fine. Not to happy that I had to spend money for a game I already had, but at least it works now. Thanks for all the suggestions
