Default [error] Insufficient video memory to load requested texture set.

    Hello,

I was wondering if anybody could be of help. I've tried introducing my own faction, (using the english faction as its template) although unfortunately I am stuck with one error.

At the bottom of my error log lies this message.

''[data.invalid] [error] Insufficient video memory to load requested texture set.''

I have searched through similar topics and have followed suggestions but without success.

My own guess would be that somewhere there must be an incorrect texture, possibly the wrong file type? Some sort of texture related issue anyway, since I doubt that its to do with insufficient video memory.

I've been following Gigantus' helpful tutorial on creating a custom faction. (Which I succeeded with before, using the Ottoman example).

    Super thanks in advance.

    My (old) PC stats:
    Windows 7,
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Prcessor @ 2.60GHz
Duel 640MB GeForce 8800 GTS (SLI)
    2.75 GB RAM

Ah just thought I'd note that I'm using Vanilla Medieval 2 v1.03

Usually this is caused by an error in the descr_model_strat.txt file so hopefully you made a back up of this file if you have altered it.

Hi Edric Welcome to TWC mate.
That error has nothing to do with your hardware so you can cross that.

U are probably missing a file in your mod that is causing the crash. Does the crash occurs right after u try to start the game or when u are testing the new faction in some custom battle?

Hello Lord Flasheart, Ishan and thank you

My custom faction does not show up on the custom battle setup screen (not even the faction icon.)

I swapped the descr_model_strat.txt with the vanilla file, but there's been no change (unless there's more that I need to do.)

I start a new campaign (My custom faction icon is present, along with its name description.) The loadscreen appears and once the load bar has finished the game CTD.

I followed the same steps as in http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=225194. However, I have added some custom textures to my factions models_strat and half of those are still the vanilla england.tgas. (For example my spy is a custom texture saved as spy_lannister as tga whereas the assassin is a vanilla english texture, mtw_northen_european_assassin_england.) Do you think that may cause an issue? My descr_model_strat has all of the correct textures linked. (I believe.)

    Thanks for your swift replies.

Ok Edric i was looking through the Crashes and how to fix them thread and perhaps this explanation might help point you in the right direction.
    CTD on startup vRAM
Q: When you start the mod you get a black screen and the mod CTDs. The logs say you lack enough vRAM.

A: There are two possible causes for this.

    1) A texture for a campaign (strategy) map unit cannot be found. This can be resolved by checking that the all the textures mentioned in the 'data\descr_model_strat.txt' file are in the 'data\models_strat\textures'.

    2) The cas file's texture is not present in an entry in the 'data\descr_model_strat.txt' file (such as 'northern_general' or 'islamic_merchant'). Each cas file has a texture assigned to it and if the cas file cannot find this texture in the entry using the cas file it will crash. There is no easy way to determine which tga the cas file wants, though Errant Knight's cas to m3sd program does tell you which tga file the cas file uses when you convert a cas file to an m3sd file and vice verse.
Give it a go and see

Flasheart is right check the textures files for agent etc the problem is in descr_model_strat.txt.
And replacing the file with default one will make matters even worse as u are trying to put a new faction here so it needs it's proper entries there in that file.

When u sort out this thing come back and report again i have one more tip for you that will make u a better with modding.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I shall try them in the morning, as I must go to bed now. I'll let you know ASAP if I'm successful!

    Until then, goodnight!

    1) A texture for a campaign (strategy) map unit cannot be found. This can be resolved by checking that the all the textures mentioned in the 'data\descr_model_strat.txt' file are in the 'data\models_strat\textures'.
I double checked the textures in data\models_strat\textures and the 'data\descr_model_strat.txt' file. Everything seems to be in order.

    2) The cas file's texture is not present in an entry in the 'data\descr_model_strat.txt' file (such as 'northern_general' or 'islamic_merchant'). Each cas file has a texture assigned to it and if the cas file cannot find this texture in the entry using the cas file it will crash. Are the cas file textures the same textures in data\models_strat\textures? I have searched google and these forums for Errant Knight's cas to m3sd program, but unfortunately I have not found it. Shall I try restoring both the descr_model_strat.txt file and all the textures back to vanilla, or will that not work?

Perhaps I should recruit an experienced coder/TW modder for my mod? I wanted to do as much as I could but I guess I'll need one sooner or later! Besides I'd prefer to focus on the visual and conceptual side of things

Thank you very much for the link Flasheart.

I've decided to get some people onboard to handle this side of the mods development. Afterall I simply can't do everything by myself, I just wanted to get the ball rolling.

Thanks again Lord Flasheart and Ishan for your help, it is most appreciated!

    See you around the Forums.

There is a rather simple way to find the error: change your log setting from error to trace and then check the line before the video error message (needs to run once more). It will list the model whose texture\cas is missing.

CAS = the actual model, to be found in data\models_strat
TGA\DDS = the texture (skin) found in data\models_strat\textures

    Hello Gigantus

This morning I replaced my mod folder(A) to start a new mod folder(B), to go through the process of creating a new faction again with extra care. Unfortunately this most recent attempt ended with an unspecified error. So I decided to try and confront this vRAM error yet again. I removed this mornings mod folder(B) and replaced it with my first mod folder(A) so that I could adjust my error log settings to trace and see what turned up. So I fired up my mods exe before changing any log settings to see if it was working ok (upto the point of crashing before campaign start). To my suprise the campaign actually started, with my new faction in place. Everything seems to work, no errors.

I wonder what may have fixed the ''[data.invalid] [error] Insufficient video memory to load requested texture set.'' error? Maybe something happened when I deleted and replaced the New_Faction mod folders? Could it be an issue with virtual memory or lack of diskspace perhaps? I was running quite low and did free up quite a bit of space yesterday.

It would be nice to get some closure on this issue, incase somebody else encounters the same problem.

Thanks again for all of the help and suggestions, and especially for the incredibly useful 'Creating a World – Adding a new Faction' Tutorial, Gigantus.

This error is in no way associated with actual memory failure. It simply indicates that a texture was supposed to be loaded and couldn't be found, ergo the game assumes it was 'too big'.
