    There is plenty of competition, even if the major nations are "working together" they can still be competitive about it. I think the biggest problem for modern Space programs is the significant price tag.

    How does going to the moon invalidate the first man-made object sent into space? The U.S. would have never tried to go the moon if it hadn't been for Sputnik.

    Alright then, first man made object into orbit. Regardless, I still think Sputnik was a bigger leap in space technology than the moon landing.

    Imo putting a human in space was the most important in this area.

    Well at least the USSR wasn't a total disaster for human civilization, but that's about all that needs to be said on Sputnik.
