Default Scientists isolate and photograph Rubidium atom

In a major breakthrough and a large step towards quantum computing a group of scientists have isolated, held and photographed a rubidium 85 atom. See picture below... one of the building blocks of the universe....

Its amazing to think that were all made of atoms. And when you see this picture of a singular atom its really hard to believe, its one of those things that its hard to get your head around, like the size of the universe, well for me it is anyway lol. Isn't science amazing, I wonder what we'll discover in say 10 years time etc

Interesting but what exactly are we looking at in the photo?

Is it the electron cloud (with a dense center), is it interference of some kind with the whole atom the point in the middle?

I would guess what we're seeing is the electron cloud. Don't know for sure though because as far as I can tell no details other than what's in the article has been released, which is odd because I would expect at least some sort of scientific paper to be released with such a breakthrough.

The bright circle in the middle is probably the entire atom. The fuzziness of the background wouldn't be the electron cloud because a.) that would be far more than the 37 elections in rubidium and b.) I don't think we have the instrumentation to view anything the size of an electron

That's an image, not a photo. Photos are made with light in the visible range. The bright spot is not the nucleus.

"and have also seen and photographed this atom for the first time."

From the article. But, what do I know

how did they "see" the atom?

atoms with electrons in their ground state don't give off any radiation do they?

What did they use as a "flash"?

Right now no one knows other than the researchers and people who have subscribed to the Nature Physics journal.

So the nature physics journal created the lie

They PHOTOGRAPHED it? Nah, surely not... A scanning tunnelling microscope, fair enough but an actual photo would be impossible, wouldn't it?
Physics isn't my area, but still... I'm sceptical there.

They used a lazer cooling technology to slow the movement of the atoms to the point where they could 'grab' one of the atoms with the lazer and hold it in place to take a photograph of it with a microscope. I'd assume an electron microscope.

I don't think the photo is really anything to get excited for. We've imaged single atoms before (see PacSubCom's post), and whether or not that photo is actually made with visible light is questionable at this point since only vague details were mentioned in the article. Whats to get excited about is what this could yield in the field of quantum computing, because being able to control single atoms is extremely important for their practicality.

Mark my words, quantum computers within the decade, and I'm not talking about mere prototypes.
