    Default Missiles overpowered?

Before we release the patch, what are peoples' opinions about missile units, particularly arrows and slings. Are they overpowered or just right?

In your answers please specify whether you're talking about arrows or slingshots.

My gut feeling is that we could do with reducing the attack on each of these by 1.

From my experience arrows are not too strong, actually they are weaker than in vanilla imho.

I dont use slingers so I cant tell about that.

slingers are ridiculously underpowered, they had so pathetic range, arrows, in the other hand, are perfectly fine

For the balance sake its better to ask the competitive crowd who play the multiplayer. They will tell you that some stuff are way too good at killing things compare to others.

Imo its fine. Slingers are the if you get them to hit phalanxes, legionaries and whatever from the back.

Yes had to nerf the slingers for the MP part of RS, they were tearing apart everything in seconds: archer, cataphracts, phalanxes. So anyone claiming slingers are weak is ill informed.

Slingers pretty much replaced all my peltasts largely because the former can do better at it than the latter. Mounted javelineers are the only skirmish troops that I find consistently useful now.

I agree mostly with this. But, if anything needs an attack reduction then perhaps arrows. Slingers could stand to be a small bit better. Thats JMHO.

EDIT: Actually, I had conceded a unit of Balearic slingers in a battle against Rome. I had them split out to the side to hit the advancing Romans in the side and back as they engaged my main battle line. I had the cavalry battle going on the other flank. Well, a unit of the equites routed at a little less than half strength (maybe 25-29 men). They just happened to rally in time to be very near my slingers and caused them to fall back further away from the battle. By that time, my entire cavalry wing had fallen on the general and his bodyguard and I wasn't about to leave that. So, I decided to alt-attack the slingers to the equites just to keep them from getting ran down gradually. I thought they might do better and at least make a stand that way. By the time I came back to them the equites were once again routing with maybe one or two horsemen left and not a slinger lost out of that unit. So, that was a little surprising.

Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.

    Thanks for the comments.

It depends on how you use slingers.....if you get round behind other units (so the shield doesn't have an effect) you can absolutely decimate other units (did that in a battle last night against Carthage - killed about 10-20 enemy with each volley), so wouldn't want to see them any higher.

Missles are fine. I don't see any of them changing. They are not overpowered at all.

the archers and slingers should be stronger. if they hit a unit from the back, the unit should have heavy casualties. also from the front they should be little bit more effective.

The casualties are already quite great. Especially against light armoured units.

Most of my campaigns are on medium battle difficulty, I find all missile units work well, balance seems fine across the board. I have played EB and the SPQR mod, so I have some experience.

Missle untis are fine as they are, ive used Brythonic slingers to wheel around and tear down Arvernii's champions. Their powerful if you use them like that but hitting most kinds of troops up front isnt a good idea. Ive done the same with scythian archers and tore down agema level phalangites from the back. All in all they should stay the same.

I'm a big user of archers, have been since the get-go. An army of Cretin archers + 3 cavalry can pretty much take out any army thrown at it. I've used a few slingers -- Balearic & Greek slingers which came in some of my factory-installed stacks -- but I've never recruited any new ones. I don't like slingers for the main reason that they seem to hit my own guys in the backs of their heads.

Seriously, in my post-Martin legions in have 1 general, 10 legionaries (including the First), 5 archers and 4 cavalry. These legions seem to do the trick quite handily. Usually by the time the archers are out of ammunition the enemy is down by 25-30% or so, with maybe 1% losses for me.

Especially those thrown by the Roman Imitation guys. I've never used them that much, and this is one of the reasons. Not game-breaking for me (nor very irritating), so I never mentioned it during the beta
