Good charities?
I think it would be useful to have a compilation of charities so any members that have some extra money know where to send it. Post any charities you know of and think are effective.
A charity I'm rather fond of is Bóthar (road in Irish), a charity based in Ireland and the UK. They provide training in agricultural practices, help establish farming infrastructure and send out lifestock and even trees (which are donated by farmers here in Ireland and the UK) to potential farmers. Their biggest operations are in African countries, but they also have them in places like Lebanon, Tibet and even Poland.
Apparently one of the most effective operations after the Haitan earthquake was Doctors Without Borders.

Re: Good charities?
A good place to start is the Better Business Bureau's site. I've linked to the alphabetical index of charities. Click on one that you like, and find out how cooperative the charity is with the BBB, how much their administrative costs are (read that, how much do the bigwigs pay themselves), and so on:
http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews/national/
Concerning Doctors Without Borders, this is the link to their evaluation:
http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews/n...ew-york-ny-783
They're not perfect, but administrative costs at 2%, fundraising is 12%, for a total of 14%, that's a good sign. I would never contribute to a charity where the administrative costs are above 10%.
