This concerns everyone that gets the 'Unspecified Error' when playing Third Age: Total War.
If you're one of the unlucky one's like me that get the error when either playing the Third Age Campaign or the Fellowship campaign then this may be the answer for you.
Specifically, I'm talking about errors such as when you besiege a settlement in the campaign, and then decide to manually fight the battle but find that the screen loads half way and then crashes!
As far as I'm aware, this is purely down to files being improperly placed or are actually missing. This could be down to installation problems, dirty discs, unofficial patchers and a host of user errors.
I want to stress, this fix may not work for everyone.
Basically, this is a short guide on how to install Medieval II: Total War and Kingdoms the proper way. I was in the same predicament where I would get the error every single time I tried any battle, but now it works flawlessly!
Things you will need before going through this process:
Medieval II: Total War 1.2 Patch
Medieval II: Total War 1.3 Patch
Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms 1.5 Patch
Third Age: Total War 2.1 Patch
These patches can be found on sites such as Gamershell. Just give Google a quick search. Make sure these patches are not unofficial though otherwise you'll be back at square 1. The way to distinguish the difference is that the official patches are titled as 1.2.001 and 1.3.001 or there abouts. The unofficial patches are titled as 1.2 and 1.3 only. So when you are prompted by the installer, make sure it does not say 'your game will be patched from 1.0.001 to 1.2. You want it to say 'your game will be patched from 1.0.001 to 1.2.001.'
So, here goes:
1. Uninstall Third Age: Total War by selecting the 'uninstall.exe' in: C:/Program Files/SEGA/Medieval II: Total War.
2.Uninstall Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms by going to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Kingdoms in the populated list there.
3. Uninstall Medieval II: Total War by using the same method mentioned above.
4. Go to C:/Program Files/SEGA and delete the Medieval II: Total War folder which will result in every containing folder being deleted. (Registry should be cleared already by uninstalling Medieval II: Total War and Kingdoms through the Control Panel)
5. Now install Medieval II: Total War. When the installer asks you where you want to install Medieval II: Total war, you want to change the directory slightly. Instead of the usual directory C:/Program Files/SEGA/Medieval II: Total War, we want to get rid of the 'SEGA' folder. So the directory should be C:/Program Files/Medieval II: Total War. (The reason why we have to do this is because the patchers sometimes miss out some files when the SEGA folder is there. Do not ask me why, it has just been experienced by myself and others.) Now let the installer do its thing.
6. IMPORTANT. This is where we install the patches FIRST. There have been problems where people don't patch and go straight to Kingdoms which has proven to be faulty. So, go ahead and install Patch 1.2.001. Once finished, your will be prompted to restart your PC for full patch effects. Go ahead and do so. (If you're wondering why I haven't mentioned patch 1.1.001, it is because this patch is useless, and Creative Assembly mucked up the patch so when you install it, you couldn't possibly patch up afterwards, leaving it at a dead end. Patch 1.2.001 has patch 1.1.001 implemented anyway.)
7. When your computer restarts, go ahead and install Patch 1.3.001. No restart is required after this patch.
8. Now we go ahead and install Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms. Install this in the same directory as the original Medieval II: Total War.
9. After this long and arduous process, begin to install patch 1.5.001 for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms.
10. Once complete, go ahead and reinstall or install Third Age: Total War into the directory C:/Program Files/Medieval II: Total War.
11. Install Third Age: Total War 2.1 Patch into the above directory.
Your files should now be installed correctly and there shouldn't be any further problems. If there are any problems, please post below and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. If you have any questions, then again, please post and I'll answer them when I get some spare time.
Thanks.![]()
