    Default English help

I've been reading Clockwork Orange, and found out that I have to do an essay on a book i've been reading, so i chose it. Problem is, i don't really know what to write about. It can be about any aspect of it, character, theme, motifs language, etc. I'd like to write something about Alex's motives being to do with totalitarianism. Any help appreciated.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

Alex seems more to be more an anarchist wouldn't you say? The state in Clockwork is totalitarian.

I've never read the book (Only seen the movie) so maybe I'm missing some vital information.

Clockwork is a nice example of social disfunction, not of a totalitarian state, but instead of an overly licentious one. The opposites meet very often.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

I'd draw the similarities between soviet russian youth in the 20s and the slang, much of it is russian.
