Default Third Age Campaign Not Loading

    Hey.

I have just downloaded 2.0 and 2.1, and when I go to start a new campaign, the game will just go back to the menu and not actually start the campaign. The fellowship campaign works but not the main one, im a bit confused as everything used to work fine when I used to play around version 1.3. I can even still load an old game, but obviously wish to create a new one.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I think the problem is that you didnt delete or rename the old 1.4 version of TATW if you had it. I think there some files remaining from it and makes some problem.

I deleted the Third Age: Total War folder before I installed 2.0 and 2.1, is there anywhere else that includes third age files?

I am having a similar problem, except with mine the game just CTD's instead of returning to menu. Any ideas?

@Kris10: no more files from TATW, all was in the folder

    @all:
If you have Vista or win7, then disable UAC.

I have the exact same problem as OP on a fresh install of MTW and TATW on Windows 7, new computer.
Unmodded game works fine, only when I try to run Fellowship or Third Age campaign it goes back to the menu instead of running. I've tried all the things issued in the sticky and haven't had UAC enabled ever.
If it helps, I also get a generic error message followed by CTD with historical battles, so I pretty much can't do anything at all with the mod.

You don't enable it - it automatically is enabled in windows standard settings.
You have to disable it on your own if haven't done it manually already.

Did you edited any files yourself (life the prefs and the cfg?)?

Also do you have patched your Kingdoms Version to 1.05? And before the
installation of TATW? And you should make sure that everything is in its
right place. I saw some guys who installed one TATW part in the "mods"
folder and the other somewhere different. Check your mod folder.

But no matter what - you should post you log that anyone can see what
    causes the crash.

No kidding, but the very first thing I did when I finished building it was turn off UAC. I haven't edited any files myself, but come to think of it I don't recall patching Kingdoms.
Yeah, it was the lack of patching. Patched it to 1.05 and reinstalled the mod and it worked, thanks.

I keep having the same problem as well. i'm running on windows vista 64-bit. never had any problems before then out the blue everytime i try and start a new campaign it just goes back to main menu. i try loading a game and then it CTD's with an "unspecified error" message. i have got it working with UAC turned off but windows always prompts you to turn it back on. is it better or worse to have UAC turned on????? Ooops current version is 2.1

You can select the M2TW folder and change the secuity settings for it alone without changing your UAC settings. Someone did a great job of explaining how to do this in great detail, but I cannot find it right now. Basically you select the Medieval II Total War folder, right-click, right-click on properties, select the security tab, select the 'Users' group, change permissions for users to 'Full', then click apply. This will have the same results as disabling UAC, but just for the M2TW folder and will stop the annoying warnings from windows. If my instructions are confusing or incomplete, search the forum or maybe someone who knows the location of the instructions will post them. I have to go to work now, or I would find them for you.

Hi there and welcome to TWC Forums!

Have you run Cleaner.bat file? Also, go to your ..m2tw/ mods/ Third_Age_3 ( where MOS is installed) /data/ world/ maps/ base folder and delete map.rwm file.

And, go to ..m2tw/ mods/ Third_Age_3 ( where MOS is installed) /data/ text folder, and delete 27 *strings.bin files located there. Check does it work now.

If it doesn't, you will need to uninstall TATW+MOS, and, reinstall them again. For reinstallation you can check my thread which has pictures, in my signature bellow, click on EK's Install Thread and you are there.

EDIT: Fellowship campaign is not playable in MOS.

First off, I do want to thank the makers of this game, it is great!

I am having the same error as all those above, trying to start a campaign returns me to the main menu. However, none of the suggestions above have worked for me. Very frustrating.

    (1) The game worked fine in version 1.4 (or whatever the last version before 2 was, I deleted it so I don't remember). Note that it worked even with UAC turned on.

    (2) I uninstalled the previous version in add/remove programs, then deleted the old Third Age folder remnants from the mod folder (there were still files left over). I then installed 2.0 and 2.1 patch.

    (3) I've turned off UAC completely (Win 7) and the game will still not work.

    (4) I've tried to reinstall the 1.05 patch to Kingdoms, but it gives me a message asking if I want to uninstall 1.05, so obviously it is installed.

    (5) I've deleted and reinstalled Third Age 2, still the same problem.

    (6) I've tried changing the security setting on just the Third Age folder, this did not work either.

Has anyone on the forum found the problem but just not posted it? Help!

    @bagman

Is this a Steam of boxed version of M2TW? Will Kingdoms play without any mods installed? If so, go to the options menu and the version should be in the upper right hand corner if I remember correctly. Verify that it has been patched to v1.05. Can you play a quick or custom battle? Post your reply and any other information that might be relevant and I will get back with you just as soon as possible. Do you have advice disabled? (May be tomorrow, but someone else might be available to help sooner.)

I can go into Kingdoms (I tested Teutonic) and play campaigns normally. It does report the game version is 1.05. My copy of Medieval II is out of the box, but my copy of Kingdoms is downloaded from Direct-2-Drive. Thanks for your help!

Ok, I solved the problem. I've turned UAC off and on about 5-10 times trying to trouble-shoot the problem, but only on the 11th time did windows actually give me a pop-up message saying that it can't be turned off without restarting the computer. I did not know this, since I've never had a problem with UAC before - and again, Third Age Total War 1 worked with UAC turned on. Not sure why it now has to be off. But whatever, now I can enjoy the game!

    Thanks for the tips, Stylix.
