    Default New Superpowers?

So, I was wondering, let's say we jump to 50 years in the future, who do you think would be the new superpowers? Or would nothing have changed at all? Besides China, I'm not sure if the USA would still be a superpower. What about Japan? They seem like a good candidate.

I think the new superpowers, or at least great powers will be China, India, Brazil, Russia and Japan, probably the EU as well though technically it's not a country

India is a long way from superpower status. Just look at the commonwealth games debacle.

But the scenario is 100 years from now, more than enough time for India to clean up it's act

I think a hundred years is too far in the future to be able to guess. So many things could happen between now and then and the world may be completely unrecognisable to how it is today. Think about whats happened in the last 100 years. Two world wars, the end of European nations as the dominant powers, the Cold War, the rise of the USSR and the US, invention of nuclear weapons etc etc etc. I doubt anyone predicting what the world would be like today in 1910 was anywhere even remotely close to the mark.

I would be happier to hazard a guess for 30-50 years down the line.

Large nations like Brazil and India will be forming Superpowers by then: they've still got a lot of things to overcome internally.

I'd probably reckon China will be an economic powerhouse, the EU will have either fallen apart or tied themselves closer together to resemble a nation, and the US will likely still be a major player in the world. The time of the US being the only superpower in the world is coming to a close, but the time of them being a superpower isn't.

China. Maybe India or Brazil. Russia has become quite unimportant, and Japan will become less important as well.

I don't think there will be any

I think there will be a number of very powerful nations with shared economic interests rather than rivalry. And it takes rivalry to make a superpower.

Well, it can be a relation both partnership and rivalry, just like the Great Powers before WWI.

Friendly competition would never cease between nations, and friendly competition can always turn into hostile anytime too.

    my predictions..

China will expireince rapid economic growth yet will not grow politically along with it, resistance will rise which'll either slow down the process OR democracy will come slowing down the process too.
India also will lag behind domestically leading to a growing inequality and unhapiness.

I'd like to see the EU growing into a true economic and political force but I feel Euroscepticism will hold it back, especially after the Greek crisis this year.

The USA however is still rising and will be at the head of the world for a long time to come.

    Rising?
Look at the horrible state your country is an at the moment. How can you possibly say you are rising and at the head of the world still? Yes, you are still a superpower, but no, China will not collapse and USA will not remain the only superpower. USA is an empire in decline.

    My Country?
Woah look at my avatar and signature, I've got the heradly of the House of Windsor and all, blue blooded British (which relevantley is an EX superpower).

The USA isn't in decline though, just going over a bump. I'm relativley sure it'll always be a superpower barring a major shake-up (which I'm not ruling out). China won't collapse but I do think this rise will slow down soon, lack of economic development outside the cities, a skewed sex ratio as a result of one child policy and lack of openess will cause people to start asking questions.

Also I'm not sure where this thing about Japan becoming a superpower is, their going to run out of people pretty soon if their not careful, the demographics are mindblowing. A overcrowded country but it can't afford to reduce population. Not to mention competition on some of Japan's traditional industries over the past 50 or so years (namely electronics) from China.

True, but fortunately for Japan, they aren't in conflict withe the US like Russia. When/If China collapses/declines, Japan will move in and use chinese labor and resources to counter its demographic problems. Fortunately for the Japanese, a japanese expansion will be permitted by the US for some time until the japanese begin to threaten US hegemony in the region.

Russia on the other hand, doesn't have the best relations with the US, and so the US will do whatever it can to ensure that Russia doesn't expand. Quite likely, we may experience a lesser cold war in the near future. However, with one side holding by far the upper hand.

Though I do not know she will become a regional super power or global super power. Regional one is certain but she can give a try for global too also, methinks.
Not so sure about global. Only a few nations in history have ever been worldwide superpowers. Namely, the British Empire, Soviet Union, and USA. Turkey won't be able to achieve the naval or economic power to go worldwide influence. But, they undoubtedly will be the dominant regional power in the Mideast. Just like Japan, her expansion will go unchecked for some time because of their strong alliance with the US. However, eventually (as already evident) they will go into conflict with the US ally Israel and with Europe as they expand their sphere. Then things may deteriorate.

You really got this in your head don't you, despite what I said? China will surely hit a recession, but not collapse or turn into Thailand. Please make me happy and agree, or I will ruin the American economy slighty, causing the country to collapse.

    Most powerful in 50 years....
    1. United States
    2. EU (although will still be politically divided, but will have a more common foreign policy)
    3. Japan
    4. Turkey

I expect China to collapse soon due to its horribly unstable economy and its growing political discontent
India has too many hurdles to overcome and it will take it well over a century to have a chance of overcoming them.

I think Brazil will be a south american regional power.

I believe the US will remain number 1 and considerably so because of its very powerful infrastructure and well-placed position on the map.

turkey's growth is already evident. china's collapse is already starting to peek its head out.

Someone mentions Japan and Turkey, but forget they are both the pets of American.

So their power = US power, which is why they can never become superpower separately.

True, but turkey has shown some defiance to its general benefactor, the US. Japan may do the same in the late future.
