I want a mod that doesn't change the feel of vanilla too much. I want native recruitment. I want an expanded map. I don't like phalanxes, so I want that limited too. Also, I usually play on normal so nothing extremely hard.

Fourth Age : Total War
Only has two Phalanx units in the entire game!
Extended map (of middle earth)
Similar play style to Vanilla rome style for most factions. Some factions naturally have a flavourful play style.
Only thing is it's not Roman...It's Middle Earth but 240 years after the books (WOAH MIND)
FATW is a really good mod, I recommend it, but it is a bit different from R:TW, and for the latest version you need BI
The tale of Legio IV Flavia Felix: After cowardice during the Revolt of 69-70 AD the IV Macedonian was reconstituted and renamed IV Flavia Felix, or "lucky legion" signifying its luck at not being dishonorably disbanded.
Rome Total Realism, I recommend it. Extended map, lot of more units, Area Recruitment. But has lot of phalanx
Europa Barbarorum is a nice mod too, there is the same as Rome Total Realism...
Oooooh, you look like someone who should play XGM.
XGM is designed to stay as close the the "look and feel" of vanilla RTW as much as possible. If you don't use Prometheus Cities (look below), you can actually kid yourself that you're playing an official expansion. Not that the CA could come up with anything as good as XGM though.I want a mod that doesn't change the feel of vanilla too much
XGM has an AOR system.I want native recruitment
The map is absolutely huge. I've attached it.I want an expanded map
There are less phalanxes than in normal vanilla, but there still are quite a few. Maybe if you ask DimeBagHo or someone else really nicely they'll make a mod that takes the phalanxes out.I don't like phalanxes, so I want that limited too.
So, click on the XGM pic in my sig, and let the magic begin.
(Also, if you want to click something else in my sig, I don't know, maybe something purple...)

Meh.
Do mean playing with them or factions that don't use them. I'm not a fan of phlanxes either.
RTR and Eb were mentioned both of which I really love.
RTR is not like vanilla if you like flaming pigs, screeching women, head hurlers, gladiators etc and EB is a different game from that though it has more non phlanx using factions to choose from.
In RTR the battles are ok and do last longer than in vanilla so I think you would ok with them. In Eb the most significant thing for me is that horses handle slightly differrently in how they charge. But ti's not a major hurdle.
Thanks, I'll give them a try after playing the sims
Try Roma Surrectum II, RTR, Europa Babarorum and XGM
I propose to you; SPQR Total War, what is meant to played with Romans. Rome Total Realisim and Roma Surrectum.
I personally prefer SPQR Total War modification. Why? Because I was beginner and I learned in this mod very new things,
like battle tactics, how to fight like true chempion and so, this mod helps alot if you wanna be good general.
