The Mighty Foederati Clash! (Online) . . .
It struck me that as I have been posting both on the Arabs and the Germans in terms of possible historical army compositions that it might be tempting and - dare I say - rousing if we staged an online clash between these two mighty foederati cultures?
But how could we possibly justify a clash, I hear you ask?
Well, after reading one of Shahid's monumental books on the Roman and Arab relations in the Fourth century, something he wrote struck me as apposite:
namely that both the Goths and the Arabs were key foederate shields used by the Romans and each one ultimately broke the power of the Roman state - the Goths cracking open and eventually sacking Rome, while the Arabs of course took Syria and Aegypt away from the Romans after annihilating Sassanid Persia.
It would be poetic then to pit these two mighty ex-foederati armies in a deep clash on some forgotten border lost to all the annals!
Hear the roar of the Germanic war-cries and the clashing of the shield-burgh against the ululating whistles of the Saraceni riders as their arrows whisper past like snakes in the air . . .
So: imagine a 3v3 Online Tournament - deep columns of Frankish, Alemanni and Quadi warriors advancing all the while the Arab cavalry swirl about in feigned confusion until the cataphracts emerge out of dust clouds now glittering with armour and kontos-points . . .
What I propose then is as follows:
10,000 solidi per Player
Large settings
Map to be determined but one which favours both open riding terrain and elements of hilly ridges and woods.
Midday and Good Weather
Armies to be composed and fought as detailed in the thread regarding Historical Army Compositions
The key here is getting 6 Players because that will really open up a HUGE map in terms of playing terrain - this will allow the Arabs to really move around while allowing the Germanic Players to march together and forge a mighty shield-burgh.
As to date, I will leave that open for now until enough Players are onboard and we can then settle on a date which accommodates us all.

I think that might work,. Except that 6 players on large or huge create epic lag. Trust me.

It's worked before with little lag - check out the Online Battles thread for past multi-player battles to see the results.
