    I. Introduction.

    Important: Before any changes make a backup of patch.pack file!

    This tutorial shows how to set your own research times for technologies in Grand Campaign of Empire Total War.

    As many of you noticed, some of the technologies in ETW take ages to develop.

    It is no problem for big countries, but when you are playing small nations it is hard to research a technology in time.

    Some technologies should be easy to discover, but in game it takes a long time to research.

    Now everyone could be a scholar and speed up the research process.

    II. Main part of tutorial

    1) First of all download Pack File Manager ( not the newest, but the older version 1.13 beta).

    2) Open with PFM the patch.pack file.

    3) Go and find a table called "technologies".

    4) Write down the following information: technology name --------- research points.

    5) Start a new Grand Campaign. Open the research technology panel and write down the technology research time. I.e default plug bayonet research time,etc.

    6) Close ETW, open Pack File Manager.

    7) Open once more patch.pack file.

    8) Edit the research points values in technologies table.

    9) Increase the research points or lower the value.

    10) Save the changes and set the patch.pack as "movie" pack type.

    11) Start a Grand Campaign.

    All research times are related to specific technology.

    You must only know 2 things: default research points and default research time (number of turns).

    III. Summary.

    Note: Placing a scholar in school or build a new research building will speed up the research process.

    Before developing your nation, check the default technology research time on the first turn of your Grand Campaign.

    Those numbers will change as you research a specific technology (on of the enlightenment type) or increase you numbers of school in your country.

    I' m playing Grand Campaign and i didn't saw any errors or problems after i changed the default research time for technologies....


    Any feedback will be appreciated, since this is only tutorial related to this issue on TWCenter!

    Pack File Manager is located on this forum in mod workshop section.
    I repeat that you should download not the newest, but the older version.
    You should find it easily as a attachment, but i didn't remember which is the post number, sorry.


    Remember to make a backup of patch.pack file first before doing any changes!
    I had problems earlier with this file, so i recommend to do a safety copy of it.


    This topic isn't closed, you could post here. I would be happy if i know that my tutorial helped someone in modding ETW. Thanks in advance!!

    hi there. This looks promising, unfortunately, I stupidly deleted my game. so i am re-downloading, i will definitely follow your advice when i get the game back. Will keep you posted on my progress.

    I would just like to thank you for all your help in advance. I may have some questions later.

    I am a university student so I don't play this game very much, usually just on the weekends.

    Heh, i' m too a university student from Poland, but the lectures will start in November ....

    I think that the technology research rate should be customized by player in Empire Total War.

    So stick to this tutorial and that will be easy and don't take much time, only a couple of minutes.

    Where do I download the PFM that edits DB tables,(Not the DBeditor It Runs too slow)

    If you have any problems feel free to ask....better not to have errors in Empire Total War.

    I'm quite skilled in using Pack File Manager... but i could tell you that editing those tables are very easy.

    Only you need to know what you want to edit and change (proper table, column, row) and everything should go smoothly.

    Now i' m trying to disable permanently those damn floating flags - if i manage to do this i will write a short tutorial on TWCenter to help others with this problem.

    Before doing any changes make backup - yes , everyone telling you this every day, but this is true!

    If you ever know how many time i spend on TWCenter to get any answer to my questions... but by patient my son as say Holy Bible

    I know Im late to the party, not even sure if you are still on this site.
    But Im running W7 and the packfilemanager you linked to is not working on a W7 pc.
    Any idea what to do?

    You can turn off the Floating flags in The Game settings menu.

    Ehh, i'm not an idiot....i know that, but you will need to turn them off every time you start new land/naval battle.

    Thanks for the link.
    I can open Patch4 and Patch5 only (no idea if thats supposed to be that way), but I keep getting the ''read-only aggregate view'' message.
    Cant edit a thing, no idea what im doing wrong or forgetting.

    create a new .pack file and copy the tables form Patch4 and 5 in your new .pack file then you can edit them

    I feel like a total tool, but how do I do that?
    Previously it all was kinda fresh forward, but currently Im not able to do a bloody thing. (and yes, thats probably me, but English isnt my main language so any technologal speech is beyond my grip).

    see this link and download the ready-to-be mods, read instruction and you can make your own mods,
    and another link for download the latest pfm, i use 3.1.8 myself.
    You have to un-check [CA files are read only] if you want to edit a CA file

    A bit late of a reply, but since you had it working for me, I kinda got lost in the game and ignored real life for a while.
    Its working perfect!
    Got the 4-turn per season and 1turn research running for this round.
    Once thats done I might do some other mods. Just to get the hang of it.

    You are welcome, i had a very long struggle extracting/importing the stuff in mod preparation,
    and kept wondering & searching why no-one had done these base mods and upload for the benefit of others
    My 6 2nd rates routed in horror from 1 brig + 1 5th rate on auto-resolve....

    Ok, feeling like a total numbnut right now.
    Got a new shiny PC and thought of playing ETW once again (older pc had, well not an i5 and a monster graphics card).
    And to play it well Id obviously had to install the 1turn research and 4turn rounds.

    The 4turn round part wasnt difficult. But I cant get the 1turn research to work.
    Downloaded the DBeditor, and did as told previously in this thread. But whatever I do, its read aggregative only. One way or the other, its the only outcome. And cant change a thing obviously.
    Im now running Windows 10 and on a x64 system, might that be the problem?
    What am I doing wrong (for as most times, its my own fault so im not blaming the program )
