    Default Moat ?

Does moat exist in this game?

I wonder if any great mapmakers have designed some into map or 2.

Does SS change any mapping or is the terrain vanilla?

I think you mean "moats" for certain stone forts?

moats are the water around some kind of fortresses or castles as a type of defence.

Britannia Campaign of Kingdoms Expansion has permanent stone forts some of which have moats. Rozanov's mod have implemented these stone forts. But that submod may have some features you won't like

Ok historically can someone tell me besides England which faction had Forts with moats. I doubt East European factions used them.

There were actually. On top of my head I remembered a story about Tzar Kaloyan - when he conquered Varna (Black Sea coast) by his orders all the surviving defenders of the stronghold were pushed into the moat and burried alive.

I was wondering if another type of defence can be created somehow - pits dug in a chess-pattern. Imagine all field of grass but half of it with 1-meter deep pits so no cavalry or artilery can pass through. Any chance of this being able to be done via terrain editing?

It's possible but very difficult and only few modders have the caliper to do it. Besides i don't think it's a good idea coz the work involved in it is more than the output.

Will be nice to see bridges long and tall in mountain castles. Ideea of a citadel with many, many gates look wierd.

Indeed. How great would it have been to have a "castle editor" From the limited topics I read the 3d battlefield seems a rather tedious part of the game when it comes to editing.

Generally speaking you get wet moats when you have flat land and plenty of rain and solid ground, and often a nearby river.

a lot of regions don't have the necessary supply of water for a wet moat.
(all year supply helps too - wet moat not so much use if it dries out.)

equally castles and forts up mountains or craggy outcrops don't normally have a moat.

(I'm sure there are exceptions to all those generalisations )

google castle moats pictures and you'll get many british castles - Bodiam, Caerphilly, Beaumaris, Hurst, Leeds (Kent) - but also quite a few japanese castles.
and further down , French, Belgian and others too.

    Thanks Rozanov.
Yep u are right it makes sense of having a moat in a plain land where terrain is not on a strategic point like a cliff etc.
    +rep to you bro.

ye I think the cities / castles in MTW2 are one of the areas a bit lacking, at the time of release they were good but now we are greedy lol. I think when playing SS 6.3 the only time I feel the engine is dated is in siege battles although they are still enjoyable because it is medieval times. Has anyone seen the reviews for siege battles in Shogun 2 now they look amazing.
