Default Should Republics have family tree?

It's always bothered me that when playing as the venetians (my second or third favorite faction) you have a hereditary family tree. Does anyone else here think that Venice and Genoa should have the Teutonic Order's system of succession. I know it was not uncommon for a family to dominate an Italian city state's politics for a while, but 100+ years?! What are your thoughts on this TWC people.

I was actually working on a sub-mod with Caesar Clivus that would give the Republics more of a Republic feel. I really should PM him.

what about Novgorod? Were they a Republic or a Duchy.
Oh, for Heaven's sake, now you're being deliberately stupid.

They were a republic. Caesar already implemented such a government system with Novgorod in BftB, what he's basically doing is just applying a similar trait system to the Italian republics.

It would be sweet if you could apply the college of cardinals system to republics. Like a select number of generals would make up the council or whatever and when the faction leader dies they vote on the new leader. I don't know if this could even be done and if it could whether it should be completely done by the AI or the player has a number of votes (3/10?) so as they can hold some sway without just voting who they want in. Might not be possible though.

Or maybe something like how Kiev is handled in BftB? BUt with more emphasis on trade for the Venetians maybe.

" This is now implemented in Battle for the Baltic. Novgorod no longer has a family tree as it only rarely that a son would follow his father as Kynaz. Each general now has a "Veche Approval" trait that shows what the Veche thinks of him. If he performs well and does things the Veche like, his approval will improve. This gives him a greater chance of becoming the next Kynaz. Conversely, if the Veche do not approve of his actions, then there is every likelyhood that he will never be more than a general. The Veche are mostly concerned with security of the Republic and trade. So winning battles, building trade buildings and lowering taxes will win the Veche's approval. Losing battles and setting high taxes will lose approval for that general."
