Icon3 Romans Vs Romans (Post Marian Reforms)

I thought it would be interesting for people to take a couple of screen shots recording their first battle where they had to fight against fellow Romans, both using post Marian Reform armies.

Playing RS1.6 for a long time I never once had to fight the Romans and I had always wondered whether when or if I ever did, the computer would have the 'intelligence' to build a legion of the same numbered cohorts and to do it with the right amount.

Playing RS2, I have fought my first post Marian Reform Roman rebel army made up of the 3rd Gallica legion. It had the correct amount of one 1st cohort and the correct amount of normal cohorts. What hurts me is that visually the 3rd Gallica are my favourites and I had to fight them.

I believe my Legion was the XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix legion.

Even though I have the post Marian reforms general box ticked I noticed these fellas (In the middle with the all red shield.) leading their cohorts. They look very out of place and pre Marian reforms. However, the box that needs to be ticked I believe is in relation to the General or family leader units and not the leader of the individual cohorts. But this still leaves the question of whether these men are meant to look like this or it is a mistake? (Answers on a postcard.)

Here is the result of my first encounter. (Edit: Just realised both my general and their's share the same name.)

Now it's your turn. Keep it short, keep it simple with screenshots masked by a spoiler bar.

how come 3rd Gallica turned against you? have you done anything to spur such betrayal?

If you look closely at the map you will see that 'Hippo Regius' province in N.Africa has revolted and thus this army must have been spawned because this unit wasn't available for me to build and neither has it since I took the province back.

at this point a small question pops up in my brainthat i woould ask...
does anyone know if is possible to get Gold Upgrades for Romans ??
Iv'e build up many provinces out to max which is possible and i don't get them yet

If not ,it looks like an small conflict with historical accuracy ,
i must do fight all those babarians (with all silver upgrades) and a Imperial Legion that also have only silver upgrades
Romans should have a much better equipment related to their better weapon economy

but thats only the way i was thinking about this point

Marcus Antonius> Caesar has many more legions than the Thirteenth
Scipio>Yes, on the far side of the Alps
Marcus Antonius> Winter does not last forever. Spring comes. Snows melt.
    Scipio>That is a threat!
Marcus Antonius> No, I assure you, that is no threat. Snows always melt.

What? Could you count those cohorts? I can see only 1st cohort and 9 regular. Is it wrong or what?

Well I never. I think it's because the way I have my legion set up means that the first slot is taken up by the general but that stack has the first two slots taken up, so looking at it without counting made it seem that they had one more. I will correct it now.

I just hit the rebellion with the campaign I posted twice in the show your Empires thread. My faction leader (Aulus Iulius Caesar, epic name, I know) was just done with his conquests in Gallia when the old rivalries in the Senate between the Optimates and Populares became a bit too hot. And just like in real life, Italy, Greece and Northern-Iberia revolted to the Optimates, while Gaul and a part of Western Anatolia remained loyal to Aulus and the Populares. One of the commanders in Western-Anatolia is Aulus' adopted son Titus Iulius Caesar, but he could never replace his father should Aulus be stabbed 23 times, right ?
Imagine, a young boy becoming leader of Rome, wouldn't that be a sight?

(Yeah, you can guess what my plans with Titus are )

Wow! That must have been some battle.

Just wondering I know the first rebellion doesn't occur in 'One Turn' but is this also the case for the second rebellion?

Second rebellion is also scripted, so YES, this is also the case. No rebellions.

Yes, that's right....the second rebellion is only in the Play_Rome campaign. A lot of people it seems are trying out the fewer stacks submod (including myself), and the results so far are pretty encouraging in terms of getting much more of a one turn style feel to it.

That stack that spawned in North Africa is something I'm really happy to see as it's the first report I've seen of a random rebellion of a single settlement to the Roman rebels resulting in a spawned legion....the trigger to these spawned rebel legions is the recruitment of a first cohort in that settlement. So thanks for showing this! My hope was that these would crop up now and again and cause some serious annoyance.

I'm pleased to hear that this legion spawning feature has worked out for you.

I would love to see some more records of their first battle against fellow legions. Anyone?

I dont think its a case of the ai being intelligent enough to build proper legions, i seem to think the legion builds are scripted at least they seem to be for the civil war when i read through the background script, but i could have been mis-understanding what i read.

With the Roman campaign there are two different conditions for recruitment of AI legions:

    1) The initial spawning during the big rebellion turn. A number of legions are recruited in response to the particular regions that rebel, plus some fixed ones like the Praeetorians.

    2) As with AI legions when you're not playing Rome, legion spawning as a result of the recruitment of a single first cohort in a settlement. These are controlled by turn counters that cause a "refractory period" of 4 turns or so during which another legion of the same type can't be recruited. Because the first cohorts are one turn recruitment, only one of these can be recruited in any settlement in one turn. This allows ongoing legion recruitment during the big rebellion and rebel legions to appear when a settlement rebels in the post marian period, to simulate the odd Roman governor here and there who's got a bit power crazy.

Had my first battle. My legion: Legio VIII (Claudia Pia VII Fidelis VII, but they haven't earned those titles yet) Enemy legion: VI Ferrata

Odds were in their favour. My line consisted of veterans of the recently finished "Bello Gallico" under Aulus Iulius Caesar, while the enemy had numerical superiority. My front was almost going to break when my cavalry (Numidians, Germans, Gauls and Iberians, who had already killed the senate's pathetic excuse for cavalry) spotted the enemy general with 3 men left. They Came, They Saw, They Charged the general and killed him in one hit. After that, they lined up behind the enemy line and charged...

    1500 Italian men routing instantly.
    1500 Italian men died.

    Heroic Victory

A question, assuming the player has conquered 85 or more provinces, after the first rebellion army supported by rebellion province(s) (2nd such rebellion in campaign) has been crushed, what is the chance for spawning another one?

    Another legion or another rebellion?
Another legion could spawn if any settlements rebel to the Roman rebels randomly and the AI gets time to recruit.
    There's no scripted third rebellion.

    I mean another rebellion.

Thanks. You already answered my question.
