I`d say gothmog. I mean, he killed feanor. Like FREAKING FEANOR. FEANOR whose spirit burned so bright that his corpse burned to ashes when he died.

Also ungoliant nearly killed morgoth- Only his balrogs could save him. Creatures that can defeat Ungoliant must be pretty powerful. And gothmog was their lord.

I see Sauron less as a fighter and more as an evil overlord.

Yeah, Feanor, Fingon and captured Maedhros, and he always had other Balrogs to help as well as a huge number troll bodyguards, that guy really did not fight fair. Oh well Evil Maia of ultimate darkness. One on One I think Gothmog as well. Sauron however would have convinced the other Balrogs that Gothmog wasn't all that after much fire, whips, and blazing swords and they were all dead but Gothmog he would have moved in and finished him off. Sauron never ever, ever fought fair if he could help it.
