Why do you think only cute pandas come into people's mind when they try to preserve the habitat. Why do people not try to protect 'ugly' animals? Are they doing this save the nature campaigns just because it is trendy?

Why does none try to protect these?

Because environmentalism can be many times traced to sentimentalism. That's why it is so popular among young people.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

Everybody likes hot girls, nobody goes for the repulsive ones. Something that does not attract you, is more or less insignificant. You don't care about things that are insignificant. That's what one of the traditional human ideologies dictates. Pure and simple.

Since people are generally ignorant, it's easier for an environmental group to explain to people why it's worth saving charismatic megafauna X rather than less identifiable members of an ecosystem (be they plants, insects, microorganisms) or an ecosystem as a whole. But because protecting that species typically involves protecting the whole habitat, picking a sort of poster species enables them to help all of the other species in a community.

The argument you are trying to make is valid of a sorts but not as you stated it.

Genes as a whole are not a valuable resource at all.

There is a fear that we are losing some useful ones through biodiversity loss, but its going to be rare and hypothetical.

The problem is that convincing people that biodiversity is important is difficult, most educated people don't understand what it really means.

well yes I meant diversity of genes, not actual physical numbers of genes.

I don't think it's that hard once you spout a few figures about how much important technology and medicine depends on discoveries from the natural world.
