    Default Use Empire halberdmen effectively

    Empire halberdmen . Number : 129 . Stat : 1 hp , 6 attack , 6 defense , no ap (because I play CoW vanilla)
    Orc boy Number : 150 . Stat : 2 hp , 9 attack , 7 defense , no ap (of course)

    You guess what side will win ?
    I say : Empire Halberd .

    Someone will think: What nonsense ! The halberd have less number , less hitpoint , less attack , less defense than the orc boy . And in vanilla , they even don't have ap attribute . This unit will complete crushed when fight with the orc boy .

    I will say : No , you are wrong . Because the halberdmen have spearwall . This attribute will change the tide of the battle .

    I had test many battle , first I test the halberd with spearwall and guard mode all the battle . The result : lose
    Then I test with spearwall and disable guard mode all the battle . The result : lose
    Then I test but don't use spearwall and disable guard mode all the battle . the result : complete lose
    At the last battle , I come up with a theory . First , I enable spearwall with guard mode . After the charge of orc boy finish , I disable the guard mode . And I win !!!!!

    When read the sentence , someone will think : "so you play the custom battle again and again just to prove that you can win the superior orc boy with the inferior halberdmen . But the result of one unit vs one unit don't make any sense since you usually must fight a battle with the number around thousands in the campaign ."

    I will say again : no , you are wrong . Because my point is " the more halberd you have , the less casualty you suffer ."
    For example , with 129 halberdmen against 150 orc boy , it take 90 men to kill 120 orc and rout them .
    But , with 5 unit of halberdmen against 5 unit of orc boy , I just lost 200 men to kill 400 orc and make them flee .

    So , What I trying to tell is : "When use halberdmen , always enable the spearwall (except when running) , use the guard mode to meet enemy charge , but when the charge is finished , disable the guard mode for close combat." . This is the most effective way to use halberdmen that I can found for now

    Well, that is as it should be, becouse NOBODY attacks halberdmen from front (except for dwarves maybe, they would probably stand a chance ;P), especially when he is a greenskin! Greenskins are always more than empire, so just circle them and attack from all sides, then even with goblin scum you will win.

    Nope, I just sent 3 units of orcs in the front WAAAGH!

    Did this really need a post? It's not even CoW specific, it's just a commonly known fact of TW games.

    halbediers will win most times, 6 units of them spread out in 1 long line with 4 units of handgunners behind spread out fully will usualy hold against most enemies, the only ones i have had break through that line is chaos chosen knights even then i still won after counter attacking with greatswords in reserve.

    in the lore empire spearwalls are very effective in confined places such as steep valleys etc... ever read about the battle of black fire pass.

    in the tabletop game spearwalls again are very effective empire have probably the best as they have an extra rule that allows for smaller units to counter charge even if it is not your turn even if you dont kill as many of them as they do you you still win through the flank attack outnumbering and denying rank bonuses, although fearless troops can be a problem

    I agree with drillmaster... don't bother changing the formation... a wall is a wall... use bricks for counter and flank/rear charges...

    Why do you guys bother? Just deploy your halberd line ALWAYS in stand ground and spear wall and never touch them again. All the job is done by your archers/crossbows and handguns. Or if they insist on coming some knights will do the job. Destroy their morale wjth handguns and once they hit your long line and hit the dirt they will brake. The only chance you don't see that happening is when you fight against Dwarfs(somethign has gone wrong in your campaign) or undead in which case you kill their knights and the halberdiers do their job with almost no losses. That's why Empire rules.

    As Averland , Averland Helberdiers are always the center of my army, supported by spear men on the flanks and swordsmen behind the lines, they bareley every get scattered. The men Hold the line for good.
