    Default D2D expansion installing problems

" I just downloaded MTW2: Kingdoms from D2D and when trying to install the game, I get about halfway thru and an error message pops up saying '***IS_STRING_NOT_DEFINED***', File: data3.cab, 'The system cannot find the file specified.' I noticed that in the zip file there's data1, data2 and data5 which leads me to believe that two in the middle there are missing. Has anyone else run into this ..."

    Solution

You need to redownload the Kingdoms game from your Direct2Drive account page, this game is provided in a multi file download, meaning that it's downloaded in three separate parts. Those parts then need to be combined once fully downloaded to form your game. Comrade is downloading one file to your computer rather than the three parts it requires.

1: Please uninstall comrade temporarily, you can always redownload a fresh copy of comrade once the following steps are completed.
2: Download and install the classic download manager from http://www.direct2drive.com/staticpa...?topic=get_dlm
3: Go to your account page and download the game again.
4: Once the download has completed, extract part 1 and then extract part 2 into the first parts folder. Do the same for part 3 and then install.

Where did you buy the game? Is it a digital download or do you won the physical discs? If digital download which site did you download from?

Now also, we need more info than what you've provided. Are you getting an error message when installing? Does it seem to install but then refuses to play?

What exactly is the problem here? Thanks ahead of time for the info. Good luck!

irishron is right - It seems to be a D2D problem but there might be ways around it. Here are the first two links I found on the matter that don't originate from TWC:

    http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic...--Defined.html

    http://boards.ign.com/medieval_total.../149738343/p1/

Both mention WinZip as a possible problem but that problem was nearly three years ago. Newer upload shouldn't have the same problems if they were at all competent. One poster recommended using WinRAR instead to bypass the problem.

The second solution might hold some promise:

I then opened each individual zip-file one at a time with Winzip, dumping them into the same manually created directory under my D drive. All of the files seemed to end up in the right place, and I managed to notice that when I broke it down, the second component of the three-part download included the "data3.cab" file that I seemed to be missing originally. I suppose this is an inssue when trying to extract multiple zip files with Winzip?

Anyways, thanks guys. Ended up to be an easy fix.

Conact D2D support with the exact error message. If there are any numbers, dates, etc. be sure to include it all.

So the only sure fire strategy I have found is simple: Completely purge all traces from your hard drive. Regular registry cleaners dont work, you have to use regedit. I keep install folders, that is the D2D download folder, and even backup all my games to a zip file in my backup, yet after an uninstall they are worthless.

So here is a simple solution, and the golden rule. After a successful install and patch to 1.5, copy your Sega/mtw folder, paste it somewhere safe. When your vanilla files are corrupted from excessive modding as mine often are, delete your install sega/mtw folder, copy and paste your backup.

Ironically almost every mod i've ever used is extremely easy to install/uninstall. Yet to re-install MTW2 Kingdoms will take a ridiculous amount of time out of your life

Seraph07, this is why I and others use modfolders. The original files stay "clean" this way. Check out the Mod Workshop for it.
