Well, its seems the popular thing to do so I thought, what the heck - ill give it a shot, so here goes.....
Tis the summer of 192
The Legio VIII Augusta was constituted two years before hand, in the sweltering heat of 194 BC. Herius Aggrippa commanding. That same year, the brave soldiers of Rome retook the beloved city of Patavium from the barbarous Gauls. However, it was immidiately beset by vicious Gauls and the beleagured troops were no match for the besiegeing army.
To combat this new threat, the VIII Legion crossed into Gaullic Territiory and engaged the army surrounding Patavium. After the battle the Legio XXVIII was constituted in the newly safe Patavium. Near Arretrium, the IX Legion was awaiting cavalry reinforcements from Bovanium which were due that Winter. The noble Marcus Maelius commanding.
Thus, in late summer of 192 BC, Herius Aggrippa and the VIII Legion engaged Captain Lucco of Gaul. Captain Titus sallied from Patavium to assist in battle. This was to be the first combat engagement of the Republican Legionaries. In Rome, Marcus anxiously waited to see if his reforms would lead Rome’s Legions to victory, or utter defeat.
The following are taken from Herius Aggrippa’s adjundent.
Strength of the Legion
12 Cohorts – 123 head
5 Auxilliary Cohorts – 150 head
2 Units Syrian Archers – 120 head
Personal Bodyguard of Herius Aggrippa – 41 head
Estimated Enemy Strength – 3400 head

Sweltering hot day – Legion stands read near a copse of trees, men are anxious
Gauls in sight now, trapped between our men and the garrison, seem anxious to fight us
Lines clash, Auxillia taking the brunt, Legionaries committed to weak points
Gauls heavy on the right flank – General has committed the Eagle to that area
Flanks holding well, new training seems to have done the men good
Gauls are fleeing in the center – their flanks are still holding strong
Cohort committed to left flank…Gauls are breaking
Captain Lucco cornered by the Garrison – he has falled to them
Gaullic left has now broken, legionaries pursuing
Gauls are now fleeing the field
Casualty notes
Roman – 631 dead, 400 under medics
Gauls – 3350 dead – 108 remain, scouts pursuing
