    Default Recommended Difficulty Settings

    Hi all,

This is my first foray into the mods for RTW. I've just installed RTR 6.2, and it looks very impressive. I've just started a campaign with rome on medium/medium difficulty, though I've now realised that it might be too easy. What are the recommended difficulty settings to get the most out of the game? I've done a comprehensive search through this forum and there seems to be no consensus on this (there seem to be a lot of mention about some type of difficulty bug for RTW 1.2 and that medium settings might be the hardest[?]). I definitely want a healthy challenge in both campaign and battle. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get into a campaign only to find it to be a walkover .

    Thanks

A lot of people say that very hard for campaign and medium for battles are best.

IS this a common view, VH/M? Any more thoughts before I start the new campaign?

Unfortunatly battle difficulty is definetly bugged so the battles are always going to be easy. If its tougher battles you are after you would be better of trying a different mod until the next version of RTR comes out.

If U want wattles a little bit more challenging, use VH on battle difficulty, and only Hard on campaign difficulty, in order that the diplomacy to be not so erratic.

That`s what I use, and works fine for me. Now i can have peace with at least one of my neighbours.

    See ya.

Look... i have played this game a million times and this famous "difficult bug" never looks clear to me. I play VH/VH and i enjoy it.

What happens is that on Very Hard battle, both sides get bonuses to their "putting the enemy off". This way, battles last shorter, which is in fact easier to fight than those which last longer - because whoever wins the first engagement has "extra" troops quicker an there is no such possiblity of leaving a unit to "hold off" the enemy as long as possible. However, on Medium, neither sides get these "cheats". Medium is the most strategical, if you want quick and probably a bit harder than easy the choose hard. If you want ultra-quick then choose very hard but beware - it is about as easy as easy because the computer isn't used to the bonuses received and therefor fights every battle as if it was on medium. Therefore, to get the most out of the AI, choose Medium.

Campaigns - well what happens here is kind of similar. When you choose a higher level of difficulty (above Medium) , the computer gets bonuses - more money etc... So the AI actually plays no better than if it was on Medium, just on Very Hard it has undrainable resources. So on campaign, Very Hard is the hardest, and it follows down with the supposed difficulty - (Hardest first) - Very Hard, Hard, Medium then Easy.

Thanks, I think so to but some people won't think they are. Nice to see someone else does!

I have H/M. Works fine to me. At least the AI is not buying EVERY City I own (Greeks pulled that stunt all the time while I was playing VH/H ). The battles didn't really change. I always attack the enemy with a smaller army to even the odds.
