I choose the numidian missle cavalry.
Because they are relativily cheap. They are very useful against elephants. They can run down skirmishers. They are effective against other cavalry. And they are exelent for pursuit.

You have to look at the export_descr_unit file to really grasp it. A lot of heavy cavalry have -1 or -2 towards other cavalry, but a unit like Heitatoi (Companion Cavalry) has a +2 bonus against cavalry.
I'd say the Heitatoi are the best faction-sided cavalry, and either Numidian missile cavalry, or thessaly cavalry AOR for auxilla/merc.
It is most definitely NOT any of the Roman cavs. I've seen an eager-fresh group of Equites Alares chase a group of broken-exhausted and routing skirmishers clear across the map and still not catch them. Sometimes I wonder if they're ponies. Even adrenalin wouldn't help a human running from any horse in real life.... grrrr.
And one Equites Group with 3 Silver Chevrons was mopped up by a group of Peltasti! The Peltasts where running away, turnes and killed half of the Group.
I would go for Companions as well.

Parthian cataphracts and horse archers. The combination of the iron fist and the ancient snipers is deadly. But cataphracts are very expensive and HAs are vulnerable to other missile troops and they suck at fighting hand-to-hand. In Vanilla, the Macedonian light lancers were the fastest cavalry (after HAs), still able to defeat Roman heavy cavalry by charge. In RTR, I can't choose. Companion cavalry is really good but they are very slow. So I think I'll stick with horse archers.

Armenian Cataphracts. They take a lot of punishment, a little more than Parthians. They slaughter Companions. Only if you do it right though...charging blindly at them will always fail.

Companion Cavalry all the way, lighter, more mobile and slighly worse than cataphracts!

the bested samnight cavarly I dear anyone to challange this as they are horse archers have bonus against other cavarly they do not get tied easy and inspire nearby units can anything realy beat them?
You mean Companion cavalry in Vanilla? They're quite unrealistic, you should play RTR. In RTR, they aren't so uber-delta: they're slow (almost as slow as cataphracts) and less armored than cat's. I just prefer the iron fist of the cataphracts to smash through the weak enemy. Cat's suck at chasing, but you can use your HAs for that. Compare cat's with tanks, blowing away each serious resistance from the enemy. HAs are helicopters who weaken and kill the enemy from a distance, crushing them when the enemy flees.Originally Posted by makeshift52
