My game freezes just after pressing the start battle button, any suggestions?

So here is the run down on whats up. I have played a battle on this battlefield before but it took awhile for the game to unfreeze itself, about 10-15 minutes I think it was. Had no problems with lag for the duration of that battle. The problem is that for that one I had to reset everything 3 times before I got to actually go. The problem now is that the same problem as before but now even after 30 minutes it will not unfreeze itself.

Info about where it takes place: It is on the Balkan peninsula just east of Corinth on that strip of land connected the south to the mainland. There are 3300 enemy troops, with a fort in my background (Corinth) and about 3000 on my side. I have attempted to let the AI take control off all but my current army which is about 1300. At one point when none of the reinforcements made it to the battle I got to start the battle but it soon locked up and had to end the program like all the other times before.

What have I done? Well, I have updated all my drivers, I have cleaned my registry, searched for ad-ware and such, I have deleted many programs, and ended many processes so that only 28% if the memory is being used prior to launching the game. I used to have problems starting the program but have not as of late. Also, I have adjusted the settings in the video to dumb them down.

I have Windows Vista (service pack 2), with an AMD Phenom 8400 Triple-core processor at 2.10 GHz, a graphics card of NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT. I have 3GB of memory (RAM). My soundcard is a Realtek High Definition Audio.

Sounds like you're using RTR Platinum? So this message will likely be moved. But anyway, some battlefields seem to cause crashes - a mapper could probably tell you more. You might be best off just auto-resolving.

I am not sure if there is any difference with Gold vs Platinum but would that help any? I would really like to not cripple my armies by letting the AI do it all (and kill a few of my generals in the process). Any ideas what is causing this?
