    Default The Magnificent 7 Plus 1 - Part 2 - Auxilia Palatinae

Here is part two of the roman skins revamp. The Auxilia Palatinae.

There were originally ten units, these being; Cornuti, Brachiati, Petulantes, Celtae, Heruli, Batavi, Mattiaci, Salii, Regii, and Tubantes. It is probable that these units were recruited by Constantine from barbarian tribes that were loyal to him, but not as yet roman citizens, hence being Auxilia units. The difference between Auxilia Palatina units and Legio Comitatenses and Legio Palatina units was that they were more versatile, being able to stand in line like legionaries or carry out skirmishing roles if required. Much like Legio Palatina units, Auxilia Palatina were originally in the service of the Emperor, but would have been transferred to regional armies as required. These troops were on a par in terms of pay, conditions, equipment and training with their Legio counterparts. There is no direct evidence for the strength of an auxilium, but A.H.M. Jones (History of the Later Roman Empire, Blackwell, Oxford, 1964 p 682) estimates that it may have been 500 or 700.

The original auxilia units were most likely unarmoured units. These troop types are represented by the Leones Iuniores, Mattiaci Seniores, Mauri Tonantes Seniores, Mauri Tonantes Iuniores. This may have been to fill the role that earlier auxiliary cohorts would have done, but the third century had seen an equalising of equipment between the legiones and auxiliary troops.

Over time these units may have become more heavily armed but like the field legions retained a proportion of light troops to act as skirmishers etc. These troop types are represented by the Cornuti Seniores, Brachiati Seniores, Celtae Seniores, Petulantes Seniores.

From left to right are the:

Mauri Tonantes Seniores; Leones Iuniores; Celtae Seniores; Cornuti Seniores; Brachiati Seniores; Petulantes Seniores; Mattiaci Seniores; Mauri Tonantes Iuniores

The Mauri Tonantes Seniores; Leones Iuniores; Petulantes Seniores; Mauri Tonantes Iuniores shields are courtesy of leif_erikson. The other shield designs come from Razor, Lusted and Atilla Reloaded.

Skin textures based on lief_erikson originals.

Bodies have been adapted from Ramon y Garcia's designs and helmets by Razor.

    Information on the Units:

The Cornuti Seniores were often brigaded with the Brachiati Seniores.

The Celtae Seniores were often brigaded with the Petulantes Seniores.

The Leones Iuniores and Mattiaci Seniores. These units are more lightly armed than its counterparts and is armed with only a large shield, heavy throwing axe and sword. These troops can fight both as skirmishers but also as line units.

Mauri Tonantes Seniores and Mauri Tonantes Iuniores. These units would have been originally composed of mauritians, and as such would have excelled in a skirmishing role. This unit is more lightly armed than its counterparts and is armed with only a large shield, verutas and sword. These troops can fight both as skirmishers but also as line units.

COOL! Cornuti Seniores were always my favorite. Is there any background to the crest colors?

Not really, though it was mainly to differentiate between auxila and legio units in game. There is a reference from Phil Barker's book 'Armies and Enemirs of Imperial Rome' but I don't know how accurate his statements really are.

Kinda random but cornuti seniores means "senior horns", which helps explain their shield design

Great job JH but i have a question to ask in relation to the both mauri, leones and mattiaci units. Is there any chance of adding helmets or scale armor for them to make em look more roman (without the need to increase their overall points)? If their appearance is as historically as accurate and you want to preserve it i have no problem with that but from my playing experience these units were the least recruitable on my chart from all other auxilla, legio and comitatenses because visually they stood out on the battlefield. To me the lack of some sort or helmet or armor put them next to city watch
