Default How to deal with chariots??

Im playing as House of Scipii in very hard setting. Im now in a full on war with the egyptions. They Keep sending full size armies with a lot of chariots against me.

Their chariots cut down my heavy cavalry.

My skirmish troops who are meant to be good against chariots get routed instantly.

It takes 3 full size cohorts of auxillia to stop one chariot unit.

They have long range archers too so i cant send my archers forward to volley their chariots, because they would just get fired back on.

Is there a way to beat them satisfactorily? I cant use more than 20 units in one battle. Against their 20.

Phalanx. Or, when playing with the Romans, auxilia, cohorts and lots of pila. Add some missiles if you like.

If I recall correctly, chariots have got feeble defense stats. Trap em on bridges or box them in towns and cities and let your heavy infantry geezers wade in and mash them up. Once they're pincered, they're a doddle to clobber

Loads of spearmen and missiles do the job. Archers are holy against chariots! pila also but they do less damage when the enemy chariots are raging against them. Whatever you do, enable the fire-at-will mode for your INFANTRY, let your archers mostly attack the enemy general chariot in order to kill the general. If the enemy chariots are close to each other you can use fire as the chariots are big.

Fire arrows work a charm. As do big blobs on not moving men!

Offer up some garbage militia or peasants for em to shoot at and charge, and whilst they're plonking about fighting yer dross units, pincer em with your best units and the chariots drop like flies.

    Get em mashed into firewood

A short guide on countering chariots (SP):

Melee Chariots should always be in motion. If bogged down, they can be slaughtered, as the scythes on the sides are then no use. To protect your heavy cavalry, there is a special formation we MPers use, called the "catabox". It is usually done with very high defense cavalry(like cataphracts), but you can also use other cav. This formation is basically just units of cav stacked on top of each other in a big blob, which chariots just can't get through to.

Chariot Archers: Do not use your archers on them if they are in cantabrian circle. This formation is specially used in MP to waste enemy archer ammo. Slingers (because of the low firing arc) are a godsend against them, and can hit chariot archers whether they are in or out of cant circle. Alternatively you can just use a garbage unit like what Fireright said for them to waste ammo on. Chariot archers become tired even faster than phalanx troops. After they become tired, you will easily be able to catch them with light cav. They don't have scythes, so are easily destroyed in melee.

About chariots running amok- Scythed chariots(the unit) are the only ones that do that. Never understood why people thought that all chariots go crazy from a bit of fire.

CoconutFred speaks the truth. Egyptian chariots don't run amok, so no fire against them. Melee chariots can usually be drawn into charging where you want with some archer fire targetting them,so make them run into a unit or two of infantry and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Despite what you might think, Auxilia are inferior to your other units in taking down chariots and will rout more easily. Just take your legions and they should do the job.

This has been asked many times over in various subforums.
Each and every time, someone always says javelins alone, which is wrong.

why ? it is very effective,
it takes down 6 - 8 chariots (on Large scale) , which is enough for me to rout them

    and why do you think:
    "?" is behing javelins.. ?

    please look better next time.

Yes, so why emphasize the question mark if you think they are effective?

So...6-8 chariots for how many javelinmen then? Don't just type the numbers for chariots and then ignore the other important number to place it in context.
Though lets face it, if javelinmen counters AI chariots, then just about everything else would counter chariots.

dude, i placed the question mark behind it so people could respond on it.
that's what you did, only in a bad way.
    and btw,

everything in the game can beat AI Chariots
hmm nah maybe not peasants, but town watch can.

I just did a migration campaign myself as the juli to Egypt...so ive been fighting chariots non-stop since ive landed on VH as well....Thankfully I managed to destroy Egypt decently quick but actually TSE fought me for awhile and gave me some decent losses but the thorn in my side has been Pontus...Half their army stack is nothing but Chariots or heavy cav! Thankfully ive beaten them down to just 2 provinces and now they mostly only have eastern infantry hehehe...

How do you start a migration btw ?
just gather all your troops and then send them to a different place.
    never done it by myself.

Pretty much...But you have to leave at least leave SOME troops in your starting towns so they wont rebel until you capture your first settlement far away from wherever you start...also if you play a faction that gets elephants or has a unit like the greeks do with spartans that can only be recruited in certain places...I would advise against a migration heh...
