    Makes me wonder, are they a bit similar to a very primitive form of zergs (They unleash spores, they take control of the host etc), or I'm playing too much starcraft 2?

    There is a theory infection with Toxoplasmosis may cause behavioural changes in humans.
    Its lifecycle is to infect rodents and modify their behaviour so that they are easily caught and eaten by cats. It then exits the cats via the intestines and is again taken up by rodents (rodents will eat anything).
    Human brains and rodent brains are similar in some respects so when humans catch Toxoplasmosis from contact with their cats it is quite possible there could be mental changes.
