    Default Random village joining me?

Was wondering if someone could give me an idea as to how this happened. (playing SS6.1)

Was playing Novgorod, and doing my thing in the NE part of the map when suddenly after ending my turn, I hear an expression like "joining your kingdom" or something along those lines.

After the others make their moves, I find the town of Wroclaw in the Polish region (not even near or adjacent to any of my regions) has joined me, and Poland automatically declares war on me.

How the heck did this happen? Bug, or something built into the game which I don't know about?

    Thanks.

Some smart guy in Wroclaw rebelled against Poland but instead of going as an independent rebel town decided to join your faction, Poland is offended from this and guess what ? Yeah you know the rest

I don't know if it's scripted, perhaps it is. I never played as Novgorod so no idea there. But seems like a Loyalty effect to me. I had random settlements joining my faction before. And once (this is a rather funny memory for me) some random far far away settlement joined me, it was the first time it happened and I was excited I thought "Hey, don't worry, you have suffered enough, you're under my protection now" their former faction declared war on me and I sent a couple full garrison to attack them, but then in the next turn they turned back to their former faction! Then I carried on the assault out of anger, and took that little settlement, burned it on the ground and then sold it to a nearby faction for free and pulled my armies back.

Yeah it happened to me once while playing as the greek cities back in RTW. Zagreb apparently rebelled against the Romans and suddenly I had a new settlement in the mini map. Also the garrison was made of Peasants with golden armour and swords

Also happened to me once with Greek City States back in RTW, I was playing Extended Greek Mod (XGM). It was an independent Greek City State that rebelled and turned my side.

this error was sorted out in a fix for SS6.1 but it's so long ago I don't know which fix to recommend.

otherwise I think the SS6.2 RC4 solved the problem but you may not want that version of stainless steel.

Is it an error? I thought it sounded like a nice feature. Maybe you meant that it's a bug that a city will join your faction, then leave again the turn after?

I had Tabriz rebel against me, and join the Turks (who I was currently at peace with), meaning we were once more at war. I should mention I was playing the Crusader States, and took the city from the Khwarezm. 6.3.

Might not be the exact same issue, but almost. I hope it's not a bug, seems like a nice feature to me.

it's a bug as the village rebels to the faction_creator faction, which obviously should not have been novogord (russia)

settlements rebelling is a feature (not a bug) of M2TW - it doesn't happen much in SS6.3 as the game has been tweaked to take account of the fact that the AI often only garrisons a settlement with a governor.

it helps if you start all settlements at town level (not village) as that lets the AI build churches, barracks etc so it can minimise rebelliousness.
also if you start at village level it sometimes happens that the village keeps rebelling as the population gets decreased after every time it gets captured, the AI recaptures it, the population takes another hit
and it never gets as far as town level so the AI can't build the necessary buildings, walls etc.

Raising all settlements to town level is the first thing I have to do when I do my mods.

So what is the meaning of faction_creator? It's not obvious to me ..

As an aside: I want to add that it's a pity rebellions are minimized, as I always loved to see regions fight for independence - especially if it's against my enemy of course.

Think of faction_creator as the kingdom that settlement has a certain or the most allegiance to - loyalists that make it defect to that faction, if the conditions are correct.
Naturally it makes more of an impact later on when there are less rebel settlements. Basicly it allows settlements that have been conquered by outside factions to defect back to their homeland if that settlement is missmanaged.

So does every settlement in the game have a predetermined "defection daddy", or do settlements revert to the previous kingdom that owned them?

If its set up like that yes and if set up "correctly" then in most cases the previous kingdom is that... metaphor.
No idea if reverting to previous owner is a function available in game - seeing as faction_creator has often the same outcome and that it never happened to me I can't say.
