    Default Modding the Papacy

I know there are various tutorials on some of this information, but I couldn't find what I'm curious about in reading through said tutorials. I've already completed a campaign as the Byzantines in the Late Era (restored the ERE), and absolutely loved it. Savage's AI is fantastic!

Now I'm wanting to start a campaign to restore the Western Roman Empire. However, even playing as the Byzantines, I always had the problem that they were more Greek than "Roman." The same could be said for Venice and Genoa. So, I basically have two questions and would appreciate any advice/opinions people would like to give.

[1] My idea was to mod the map and a few other things so that the Papacy is based not out of Rome but out of Vatican City. Then, using the pre-made general for the Papacy, Nicolaus Corriagius (sp?) create a "faction" that is based only within Rome. So, basically, is it possible to split the province that is Rome into two so that "Rome" can be right next to "Vatican City" -- and likewise base the Papacy out of Vatican City while Rome is commanded by Corriagius and his new faction?

I have basic modding knowledge with scripting, but I'm not entirely sure what I would need to change to make all of that possible. If it's too much trouble, please let me know because I don't want to waste a lot of time trying to make something work.

    and

[2] I had contemplated marrying one of the princesses of either Venice or Genoa to the Papal general, but that's not possible -- I assume it's scripted somewhere that he's married. Is there a way to change it to where he can be courted by one a princess?

Regions in SS are at the maximum number so to split Rome into two, you'd have to remove one region.

From what I understand, there is at least one free faction slot, so it's entirely possible to create another faction, but the maximum number of units has been reached, so the new faction wouldn't have any unique units unless you removed other units. If you just wanted to make it a clone of the Papacy, that is possible.

If you want to recreate the Western Roman Empire that is based out of Rome, just play as the Papacy. It is rather simple to make them playable. See my AAR in my sig for details.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be sure to check out your AAR. My main thing is, I don't really want the Pope to be the leader of my faction; I enjoy having a family line and all of that goodness.

As far as the potential problems you mentioned, I think they could be bypassed easily enough. As for regions, I would probably remove one in Africa that the Moors hold -- not entirely "important" provinces as far as I see it. And for units, I wasn't really planning on creating any new units; I had rather planned on perhaps copying Genoa or Venice's units; is that possible?

I had considered creating my own "sub-mod" where the early campaign begins in 1143. In that year the people of Rome overthrew the Papal yokes and created the Roman Commune, which included a Senate and Republic modeled after the original Roman Republic so many years before. I think that would be interesting. However, I'm not entirely sure how I would go about doing all of that haha.

Anyway, thank you for the response. I may just play as the Papacy in the end.

If you're going to remove a region, you could probably remove one from Ireland. The Irish don't do much, and the AI Scots/English usually don't even bother to invade that Isle. I believe that one or two regions from Ireland were removed in 6.3 to add another to the Black Sea area. Removing a region from Africa might affect the Moors, such that you might want to re-balance some of the other settlements.

You'll want to check the modding Forum for details on adding a faction and giving it the relevant units. I'm sure it's a relatively simple process, but they'll have more details on it. Due to it's proximity to the other italian factions, I'd imagine it'd be a mixture of Sicilian, Genoan and Venetian units.

If he's playing an remotely recent version of SS, the Irish have long since been removed.

    @ christophoros:

What you want to do is certainly possible. You'd better ask in the Mod Workshop though, as they'd be be better equipped to answer you. Try looking through some of the tutorials found HERE

Awesome, thanks to both of you. I will certainly check out the various tutorials and read into exactly what it is that I need to do.
Again, I really appreciate the help!
