Icon10 Just a question: Female dwarfs with beard?

I remember Aragorn in second the movie making a joke about the dwarf women, something about that they have beard... but I though that was just a joke... Looks like KK team has interpreted this literally.

Im not that expert in LOTR lore but I have seen many dwarf womans in my life and they have no beard. They are just small, only that.

    Correct me If im wrong.
    Anyway its just a curiosity.

I believe Tolkien himself is on the record as saying that, not only do Dwarf women have beards, but they're virtually indistinguishable from Dwarf men, so even if you DO see one (which is rare), you wouldn't be able to tell.

Dwarf women, it is noted, are rare in general. They only make up about 1/3 of the Dwarf population.

The before refernced quote is froma a long essay on the types/customs etc of the dwar
f clans, http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/l/longbeards.html we are told under a third of dwarves are female, and only a third of them will take a mate, and why etc, we are told they dont till the land and grow crops, and rely on humans to do this in exchange for metal working, also that humans are emplyed as mercs, mounted, as no dwarfv will use a horse, so all usfull info for modding, and also a damn good read.

That's not entirely accurate, tolkien says that some women didn't take a husband (nothing is said about reproduction though). Tolkien said that elves don't have sex outside of wedlock but he doesn't specify about dwarves which makes me believe that this is more specific to elves.

Yes your correct, what JRRT wrote was that under a third of dwarves were female, (67 to 33 ratio at max) and that only a third of males marry, so thats 22 of the 67 males , and 22 of the 33 females who marry and re produce.

As 2/3rds of males and third of females dont marry, and he gives us reasosn why they do not, and a low pop growth, and zero refernces to dwarves who are from out of wedlock, its a fair asumption, that Dwarves only re produce in a stable relationship in wedlock, just like elves.

Galadriel was celeborns lover, and lived with him, before they wed, btw, so the evolution of elven sex and relationships had its anolmieies as well.

Bearded dwarven women is probably the biggest of Tolkien's screw ups.

Apparently for Dwarves, the genes that'd normally govern height growth changed to hair growth.

Dwarves just have strange fetishes I guess

Anyway, Tolkien did mentione Dwarve women would be hard to distinguish from the males...

I wonder if Aule would like Yavanna to grow a beard. ;-)

Seriously, being a god you create in your own picture - and Aule had a hot wife. Crazied a bit but hot. Why would he make dwarves awkward like that?

Dwarves were invented before the concept of sexual dimorphism.

Dwarves are like the Spartans, whose brides on their wedding nights were made to look like men (hair cut like a mans, men's clothing, etc.). This made the grooms comfortable, who were more accustomed to the company of other men.

I don't mean to say that the sexuality of Dwarven males is in question, only that what they find attractive is possibly different due to how they spend the majority of their lives.

And if Dwarves find a good beard beautiful, why shouldn't their women sport them?

Tolkien didn't make a mistake, he penned an original idea.

That was an intelligent post and you didn't mean to do it but now I have an image of gay dwarves stuck in my mind...

What's worse Pratchett and others followed this stupid idea. Kudos to D&D for fixing it.

I think Tolkien regretted it himself - not including any dwarven woman into any of his books.

Aule is a god but no "the" god, iluvatar, so his creation is not exactly perfect and he might have made a mistake in his recipe

The bearded women was my interpretation and one supported by lore, my guess is that it was his way of teasing C.S. Lewis.

Yea, I'm not blaming Third Age for following the lore. I'm blaming the lore.

The Dwarves are supposed to be dramatically different physically, mentally, and socially. Tolkien goes into great detail why they are the way they are, and why them being so greatly influences the overall story of Middle-Earth. I seriously doubt it was a mistake, or even regretted. There are plenty of real life women that grow long facial hair. All mammals, male and female, have hair all over their bodies, even their faces.
