Family Retainer From Nothing?

I was playing as the Saka the other day and the darndest thing happened. I had no messages on the screen, then checked up on the traits of a general and all of a sudden the general got the "family retainer" ancillary just from looking at him. Is this supposed to happen?

Yes. Every new FM receives a starting ancillary from the script. This can also be a clerk or a spear carrier, for instance. If a new FM comes of age that turn, he'll receive the ancillary as soon as you right-click on him, or you move him out of town and click on him again. If you leave him be, he'll get the ancillary with the next turn.
