    Default Papal Guard

Just wanted to comment on the sheer awesomeness of the Papal Guard spearmen unit.

Playing as Sicily (trying out BYGs for the first time, picked an easier faction, VH/VH) in SS 6.3, decided to screw it all and just go for Venice, and got excommed the next turn of course. Pope seiged 3 of my nearby cities with small armies and fought my field armies with his major ones.

One particular battle, I sallied out with some nearby reinforcements and had a General (4 dread), 2 Urban Spear Militia, a unit of Miles and a unit of Sicilo-Norman Knights. He had 2 Papal Guard and 1 General.

Sandwiched his general, slaughtered him. Papal guards were engaged by my Spear Militia, so I charged them from the rear.

Here's the amazing part. I reduced them down to a unit of 4 and a unit of 2. Their general was dead, and my guy had 4 dread. Their morale never dropped below EAGER. I mean, WOW.

Not complaining, just thought this was jaw dropping enough for me that I should share it. Wow....

Wish I could recruit those guys....

The Papal Guard have devoted their life to the protection of the Pope. Doesn't do them much good if they use there life for anything other then that

Yap. In a byzantine campaign, the papacy was the only hard enemy in Italy. Of course they have it 8 full stacks, but I love them. To bad the papacy when play crash the game. I know is boring, but units are superb.

You can just mod it where you can train those units as another faction, takes sometime but it can be done.

For me, the fun in the game is winning with weak units by using their different qualities in effective combinations. "Awesome" units are to me a bit boring..
The game development business is one of bottomless greed, pitiless cruelty, venal treachery, rampant competition, low politics and boundless personal ambition. New game series are rising, and others are starting their long slide into obscurity and defeat.

My fav way to handle The Popes Guards is to be deffending, and let them bash down my gate, then Flood the gate house so that thier army bunches up right under the Burning oil. ahhh goos times watching the popes guards get burnt to death while my millitas hold them there.

Nothing some good mounted crossbowmen cannot take care of.... add some deadly fire (culverins+ribaults) and their morale wil go down faster than what you thought.

And yes, they "route" away. Like cowards rabbitts.

(this from someone who has just exterminated 3 Papal stacks and took Rome and Florence and from the Pope).
