I'm not sure about this, but the Third Age MOS submod has some scripts that change the holy war mechanics quite a lot without removing them. In Bellum Crucis, the game charges you 3000 f. for asking the pope and ten times that if he actually agrees on your proposed target. That would be another way of preventing players from exploiting crusades.

The problem is not the players but the AI though. The AI keeps spamming crusader armies.

Its much more work but if the system is so broken I think they could be replaced with Scripted historical Events (Crusade of Varna for example) that spawn armies who attack a historical POI fitting the crusade

Yes, I had planned to have at least scripted Smyrniote crusade, Savoyard crusade, Barbary crusade and Nicopolis crusade to at least cover the XIVth century. But as you said it does take more work and time and currently we don't have any capacity as our coders are away/inactive. Hopefully in the future we can have that sort of scripts but until then it's vanilla crusades.

So give or take, I guess we can expect a release in Fall 2020 / Winter 2020?

Stalled for a while. Alondite had to focus on his phd, while I had to go away due to personal issues related to the pandemic. We are both back now and progress is back on.

Well that's good to hear I'm so looking forward to this game. I have a question for the testers who have been able to play the game did you come across ctds.

None that i can remember on top of my head. Maybe there was a one here and there, but that's with a full Ottoman and Hungarian campaign, and never an important one

I was playing as byzantines, I only experienced one. After reloading the game it didn’t reoccur.

I played a Bosnia campaign and did not experience any ctds. But if there are ctds they should be solved if the 4gb patch is used but we are not allowed to recommend using it or provide links for it.

It’s a patch for the medieval 2 engine that allows the game to utilize more than 2 gb of ram to run.

That would be very useful - do you have a link?
Any idea if that would be steam compatible?
