    Default Epic

As the Romans I've defended the Spanish town you start with three ( but didn't take pics of 1st ) times against ( IMO ) overwhelming odds. I used little else but the Balearic slingers and ( very cool looking ) spear-men you get from the settlement as it develops a little. I think it outs puts to rest the notion that missile weapons are weak that I read in a thread before. The atmosphere combined with epic music was just extraordinary but I'll just let the pictures do the talking.

Battle 2: 5-8 odds Attacked from 2 Directions. Here I developed a nice effective strategy to use with the slingers.

    The nice spear-men.

Battle 3: 1-2 odds Attacked from 3 directions, barely managed to get this one.

    Wow! Well done! Looks epic!

Did you sally out? Has anyone actually had the AI assault the city? In my current campaign my cities have been besieged many times but the AI just builds equipment and keeps besieging even when its has overwhelming odds. Its gives me enough time to bring up reinforcements.

I'm playing as Rome and I'm only about 15 turns in but the Macedonians have already stormed and stolen the Greek city that you start with, no-ones attacked my Spanish city yet, in fact the faction that attacked PolishHussar approached me and asked for peace so it looks like my game is going to be completely different from his.

The thing about slingers is that they do have armour piercing ability, and balearic slingers being what they are, I think they have one extra attack point. Obviously this could lead to people spamming them as they are undoubtedly effective, but the AP ability did seem reasonable historically.

To answer everyones questions my difficulty is H\H, they assaulted me after two turns I think and it's a 0-turn campaign.

The turn after the third battle they've besieged me again and I didn't even get to retrain, so I'm sending some relief from Rome.
For some reason I've really grown attached to that settlement and don't want to let it fall.

with good reason to that settlement post marian reforms has 4 legions + auxillia so its a good military base for future operations vs the spanish or gauls

i am taking rome faction in hard/hard difficult and 0 turn campaing.
my campaign in hispania agains carthage is massive and overwhelming.
8 fleets in every fleet transport one legion.
every fleet have, three trirremes and six birremes.
in total nine ships for fleet.
eight legions send to iberian peninsula agains carthage with my better generals.
in the north of italy leave a legion on the border of Gaul and another legion in my possession border with greece to avoid a possible attack by opportunistic King Philip V of Macedon.
my polibian legion is composite for:
    the general unit.
    two velites units.
    eight hastati and principe units.
    three triari units.
    two cavalry units.
    total 16 units for legion.
my roman polibian army have a total of ten legions in this moments.

my objetive is to snatch your belongings carthage in hispania and the balearic islands and then sign a peace with carthage.

then, begins another campaign against macedonia, this kingdom has been trying unsuccessfully to wrest the region that have rome in the adriatic and be given a hard lesson.

I had a similar battle except it was my 3,000 Romans against 2 carthaginian stacks and 2 gallaeci stacks. Combined they were 10,000 men. I lost around 1,500 and killed 8,953. I plugged up the gaps in between the town center...every possible way in was blocked by at least two cohorts, some triarii supporting them, or cavalry. I routed each section one by one, using the troops that had been guarding each section to reinforce the entryways that were about to give way and that needed support.

I have noticed that against infantry slingers seem to work better, where as javelins work better on cavalry. Much more than I've noticed in other mods I've played. I haven't played anything other than Rome yet, but the AI phalanx units are much harder to kill ,compared to mods like RTR, with roman troops.

Javelins are lethal against the rear of infantry units. I routed a Sacred Band unit in seconds by getting some Thorakitai behind them. I expect that from Vanilla, but was pleasantly surprised how effective those tactics are here. Was getting a bit fed up of the infantry 'slog' of other realism mods.

Indeed, getting Slingers and Javelin throwers on the flanks or behind the line of battle is a very effect tactic.
