Neither, it's up to personal preference.
In the late campaign you have a few different nations (Teutons!!!) that are playable and the factions are generally more advanced, larger,... You also will have quick access to things like plate armor.

Early is better if you prefer to build an empire out of nothing (well, less than late at least) or just prefer the early units/factions. Try both for yourself.

On a side note, if this is your first time, i'd recommend you use the setup to enable Savage AI as it's the most balanced. Also, make sure Byg's Grim Reality is off, that's some pretty advanced stuff.

Beowulf pretty much said it all.

Personally I prefer early campaign. It gives me a chance to really get dirty with Medieval warfare, avoiding powder units as long as possible. Building a mighty empire from the ground up appeals to me as well.

Sanderlicious, that quote of yours does it read: I came, I saw, I slept? Just curious.

Also, did you intentionally choose a name that is absolutely awful to type? I mean really, it just felt wrong

Early is my favorite. I only play late when I want to play as the TO.

Like the other poster have said you have more time to build up from nothing, and create an empire. Also it avoids getting gunpowder units too early.

I think the really late period armies make the game boring.
