Default So I created a map (Thanks Gigantus!)and...

I would like to experiment with the rest of the modding process...

I know we are supposed to get permission from the original modders to use their work in Sub Mods, but what if I am just doing this for my own education? Also is there a walkthrough on this that covers everything? For example, I know that the various factions in M2TW are "re-skinned" in the mods; Egypt is High Elves, England is Mordor, etc...

But how are the reskinned models actually implemented? I see there are new folders in the THIRD_AGE folder which appear to contain the new models. Is it simply copying these folders into the mod folder?

Also I followed Gigantus's Mapping Tutorial, but when I add new regions to descr_regions (and map_regions.tga) it recognizes London_Province, but not my custom names. For example I attempted to add the Elven Haven of Celondim (from LOTRO) as a new province/town on my map, and it tells me the name doesn't exist in the strings table. I don't know what I am missing.

Anyway, I am hoping there is a comprehensive modding walkthrough out there. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Armegil

But I want to be the Leonardo DaVinci of modding. Seriously though, I want to try all aspects of modding to find out what I like best/have a talent for...

Also in Sub Officer Basic I was taught that I needed to know how to do the job of everyone in my division. I didn't have to be an expert, but I should know enough to understand the work going on and make informed decisions. If I ever want to lead a Mod, I will need the same basic understanding of the process...

    Mapping includes both actually.

Yup, if you want to do any kind of modding in TW games, you are forced to do some coding in the process.

Thanks, glad to be here. I am a huge Tolkien fan, and a friend got me into M2TW just because of the TATW Mod!

I had this exact problem with a mod i tried to make, TATW seems to be really weird and doesnt like people making new settlements or something. I have posted my files to gigantus and he says there is nothing wrong, i have the right named files, my .string.bin is fine etc. yet it doesnt work i have no idea wat it is

You're only supposed to get permission to release modified models and textures. If you want to modify files for your own benefit you don't have to ask.

The unit_models files contain all models and textures, they will be include in the game through the battle_models.modeldb file.

Assuming you have the names of the regions you want in the imperrial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt then delete the .strings version of that file. The game should make a new one with the regions you want.

That is what I did. the file is re-created, but I still get the "not in stringtable" error... It is driving me nuts!

I got the new regions names working. I had been adding the names from the Beleriand map onto the end of the existing Third Age files. I think the size was exceeding some internal limit and truncating the new data when the string.bin file was regenerated. After I deleted all the Third Age Regions and just left the new First Age Beleriand Region names it started working...

I am now proceeding with the mapping. Will let you know how the project goes.

The hard-coded limmit for regions is 200 (or 199 and 1 sea, which you probably have).
